Just talked to Westinghouse Recruiter
Hey everyone, I got ahold of Tricia today from Westinghouse. She was very thorough with explaining the process. She emailed a link to apply for the Decon positions at the Westinghouse site that cannot be accessed by just visiting their website. I was told to pick outages I’d be most interested in and send them to her which I’m about to do. She said they will begin their full staffing process next week. She explained they take people's wish lists and sends the plant the resumes that come with the application. I’m excited to get into the field! I was falling back into the pattern of just going to work and coming home, and not actively pursuing this career move. I’m happy I decided to call today 🙂 I took a photo of the outage list and asked chat GPT to coordinate what would be the best outages that go along with my goals, and it did pretty good for the most part, but there is a bit of overlap in between these outages. Can I leave one early, or start one later? I don’t know how that’s viewed in the nuclear world. @Michael Williams you probably have a good idea on how this works? Have a great day everyone

@Matloc Mosher, do you mind sharing that Decon position link by private message? I had applied for all the posted decon positions back at the beginning of the year trying to catch the spring outage. I've since rewritten my resume but it won't let me apply for any of the posted positions & just says "already applied". No worries if not-
Am I a Vet yet lol?
I’d like to share my experience getting started as an entry-level Decontamination Technician. So far, I’ve really been enjoying it. I’ve met a lot of great people and learned a ton about the nuclear industry in a short amount of time. I was able to get in touch with Tricia via email, which led to me getting onboarded with Westinghouse and brought on for this outage season. My first assignment was at Brunswick. Funny enough, Michael Cheng and Jonathan Vowles from this group were actually my roommates, so that made for a unique and solid experience. The schedule there was 6 days on, 1 day off, working 12-hour night shifts (6 PM – 6 AM) with a consistent off day each week. I was netting around $2K per week after taxes, which I consider pretty good starting out. Timeline-wise, I reported to Kings Mountain for training on 2/16, arrived at Brunswick on 2/26, and stayed there until 3/25. I’m currently at McGuire Nuclear Station, again working nights on the same 6-on, 1-off schedule, and earning about the same weekly net. For anyone trying to break into the industry, especially if your goal is to become an RP, my personal recommendation is to start as a Decon Tech. It’s one of the best ways to get your foot in the door. From there, you can have someone proctor your exam at a plant while gaining real, hands-on experience. I’ve heard this multiple times, and now I see why the best RPs in the industry often started as Decon Techs. While there’s nothing wrong with coming in directly as an RP, I’ve noticed some lack practical decon experience. Being a strong RP isn’t just about knowing procedures it’s about combining RP knowledge with real decontamination understanding. My biggest piece of advice: network as much as possible. Don’t be afraid to talk to people, ask questions, and build relationships. That alone has opened doors for me and put me in positions I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Hope this helps someone coming in behind me. p.s. @Michael Cheng passed his Fun 1 at Brunswick so let’s all congratulate him and I am taking mine at my next plant so wish me luck.

Sean, thanks for the insight! I'm pretty interested in starting at Decon myself. If you have time can you tell us about day in the life of Decon work. Also what per diem amounts did you see in these locations? Was per diem just for the 6 days or 7 days?

Interesting- all the Decon positions require 3+ mo's experience. I was looking to start with decon first & experience that side first before testing for RP. Now wonder if we need to push to get RP certified this summer instead?

Nice! I was on this website a month or two ago- looks WAY better now!. I like the status map, especially. 29 planned outages for spring 27' is promising too! Lots of work to do!

@Michael Williams last time on the site I was browsing some of the forum posts & saw it was pretty dead/little activity. No, didn't get the premium plan. I saw you mentioned accessing that. On a PC the right side banner has "site news" posts that links to this post that mentions the # of planned outages: https://www.nukeworker.com/forum/index.php/topic,55857.0.html
D&Z Fall Outages
Just noticed the fall outages are now open to apply on their website: https://www.dzrptech.com Login upload resume to your account then click on "apply for positions". They also have NISP procedures and RP study material available. 👍

@Daryl Wright I didn't make it on any spring work. So, I'm not yet committed to any of the three. I'm interested in working Decon for fall & not chasing the RP route til I work a season & get an idea what works best for me. Michael Williams moved from Westinghouse to RSCS so he would know more about pro's/cons of changing companies.
