What’s one toxic work habit you’re unlearning?

I'll go first - this is a toxic work habit that I'm unlearning: This belief that working to my limits is what I MUST do and how that absolutely equates to my success. Why do I equate hard work with success in such absolute terms? I will work hours and hours a day, not taking breaks - not eating, resting. Not a good work/life balance at all. Just adding all these things to my to-do list. WHY? Corporate America taught me this. They taught me to work harder, to get better bonuses and performance reviews. It was a WHOLE LIE! I call myself a recovering workaholic, because I've always done many things at once (jobs, businesses) along with raising a family. WHEW! No wonder I'm tired. The crazy part is, this is actually a self-limiting belief: Those with resources, titles and wealth delegate responsibilities. They have someone else to do everything for them. And those in corporate America with resources absolutely don't work harder -- they just have more resources to delegate tasks and responsibilities to others. FACT: People with the least actually work the hardest. FACT: Hard work alone isn't the answer, because if that was the case ... Still, my brain still has a hard time slowing down, easing into rest and relaxation. I feel guilty at times, because I know I can be more "productive" but the gag is: I've always got SOMETHING to do. I'm getting better at it, mainly thanks to where I live now, in France, where they're better about work/life balance culturally. But old habits tend to sneak up on me sometimes. That feeling that I'm not doing enough, that I could do more. People here look at you crazy if you tell them you're working the weekends - because to them, what do you mean you're working weekends. Didn't you work during the week? Why are you also working on weekends? France is a 35-hour work week type of place and they are very strict about work boundaries. I'm a work in progress, but I'm getting better. 1. I take a deep breath and recognize self sabotage. 2. Redirect my thoughts, thinking about my core values and beliefs. 3. Commit to change - I'm more than work, and work doesn't define my values or beliefs. I use positive affirmations and carve out rest and relaxation time. I don't always HAVE to do income-generating activities; it's OK for me to rest!
I'd like to introduce myself!
Hey everyone, I’m Tenisha, based in Paris. After 20 years in corporate America and nearly 15 years as a journalist, I realized success without peace isn’t really success at all. My word for this season is rest. I’m learning to slow down, heal, and live softer after running a business, working corporate, and always having a side hustle. 😫 It's not easy, but that's why Ayana Glaze and I co-founded The Corporate Detox. It helps that I'm in a country that values work/life balance, but hustle culture still whispers to me sometimes: Are you busy enough? Shouldn't you be earning money? I'm still learning. Whether you're in the C-suite, a cubicle or the shop floor, you're safe here. You're seen here. And your story matters!
