Who's Missing From Your Story?
A decade ago, my niece — who is hard of hearing — led me to produce a horror short about a deaf child whose mother was possessed. It was deeply personal. And it opened my eyes to something the industry still hasn't fixed. Stories centering differently abled people are rare. Hiring differently abled actors and crew is even rarer. We live in a world full of people who look different, move differently, and experience life differently from us — yet we keep writing characters who only mirror our own experience. That's not just a missed opportunity for representation. It's a missed opportunity for better stories. I challenge you: step out of your comfort zone. Include a character who is integral to your story, whose life is drastically different from your own. Do the research. Talk to people. Get it right. You'll be surprised by what it does for your story — and for the community of people who finally see themselves on screen. Who's the character you're not writing because you're afraid to get it wrong? Drop it below. Let's figure out how to write them right.

There's a character I have called Rio. She is someone who is top of her class, a model student and an even better and successful Engineer. However, she ends in an accident, and ends up in a coma. The rest of her story is split into two different paths: Path one: was my original story for her, she lost her life to a clone made to replace her. The clone believes and excels in what they do and struggles through the challenges meant for her. Rio wakes up and demands her life back, leaving them both broken by the end with nothing remaining. Path two: Is my current thought, leave Rio in the coma. It makes things "easier" to write but the clone knows about Rio, and watches over her, and continues to do the duty she was made for.

@Melissa Butler Quiet a bit lift.
What’s blocking you? Let’s fix it.
Drop a quick check-in below using this format: 1. Project: (feature, pilot, short, series) 2. Blocker: choose one — Clarity (logline/goal unclear) - Structure (beats/act break) - Scene (stakes/dialogue/entry/exit) - Character (want/need/arc) - Momentum (time/focus/motivation) - Tech (Final Draft/formatting) - One sentence about the problem 3. Tiny next step (10–15 min) Speed un-blockers (pick one): - Start the scene late, leave early. - Raise the cost or choice at the end of the scene. - Ask: “What does my character want here, and what’s in the way?” - Swap exposition for action (show it) - Outline just 4 beats: Open → Midpoint → Climax → Final Image. - Do a messy pass—pretty comes later. If you want targeted help, add "[HELP]" and specify the type (e.g., logline, beat, scene, motivation). Let’s get you moving again.
