I posted this in Skooler but thought I'd bring the conversation over here too. 😊 When I started my community, I didn’t plan to have a community mascot… but somehow Mr. Mullet Tortoise showed up and now he’s kind of doing important work around here 😂🐢 At first he was just for fun.A playful way to describe how I actually build things. But even in the short amount of time he’s been our mascot, I’ve realized he’s helping the people in this space in ways I didn’t fully expect. Mr. Mullet Tortoise is basically a reminder that growth doesn’t have to be loud, rushed, or exhausting to work. Business up front. Party in the back. Slow, steady, intentional progress with room to be human and enjoy the process. There’s a quote I love by André De Shields that says: “Slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be.” And that pretty much sums up what Mr. Mullet Tortoise represents here. What I’m noticing is that having him as part of the culture makes things feel safer. Safer to move slower. Safer to not have everything figured out. Safer to try things, experiment, and still have fun while building. Instead of feeling like rocket ship mode has to be the default all the time, there’s this shared understanding of: “Oh, I’m just in tortoise mode right now. And that’s okay.” Because when you’re consistently slow and steady, that’s usually what creates the moments of rocket ship results. It also gives people language. They don’t have to explain their whole business situation. They can just say: “I need more tortoise energy this month.” or “That launch was very mullet energy.” And everyone gets it. That shared language matters more than people realize. What I’ve realized is that Mr. Mullet Tortoise has become less of a mascot and more of a culture cue. 👉 Build real systems 👉 Move at a sustainable pace 👉 Leave room for fun, personality, and play So no, he’s not my community mascot just to be cute (though he is 🐢). He’s a symbol of building a business differently.
