...Million Dollars! Would it be okay if I shared a story with you? I was staring at my bank account and I was really worried. I was 46 years old and it seemed like I would never get ahead. I had that roller coaster stomach that felt like the bottom was dropping out. I had just come back from a speaking gig in Louisiana for a large Primerica Leader and I had been so thrilled that I had made $15,000 from one speaking gig - I remember adding up the orders forms one by one while I was on the plane back to NY and I breathed a sigh of relief - everything would be okay! But it wasn't. It was several days later and all the money was gone. It was all spoken for. I was barely staying alive and every month I wondered if we would make it. I was searching for answers. What was the secret to going into hyper-drive with my speaking and consulting business? I couldn't figure it out and was calling every leader I could to send my book and CD's to them so that they could consider bringing me into speak. I couldn't get traction even though I was working as hard as I could. And then...one conversation changed my life. I was referred to a successful speaker named Steve. Steve agreed to waive his $1,500 per hour consulting fee and just have a friendly conversation and he asked me the QUESTION that changed everything for me: "MJ, how many emails do you have? How big is your email list?" My answer, "Well, we've got 1,500 in Constant Contact and then another 2,000 emails on a group list so I guess about 3,500. Why?" Steve said, "MJ, until you have 10,000 emails you'll NEVER make it in speaking and consulting. Anyone who is anything in this business knows that they need to have a HUGE list to market to! You need a LIST of prospects you can market to Man - get to it!" My head exploded and I got it! I needed to become an Online Marketer - I thought I was in the speaking and motivational inspiration business but I wasn't - I was in the Marketing Business and I needed to start thinking like a Marketer. And Marketers know that they need someone to market to. I needed LEADS that I could market to over and over again.
