Question for Phil
Hi Coach and everyone I’m working with a 15-year-old freestyle wrestler who represents his country at national-team level. He weighs 72 kg and is 184 cm tall. His main limitation seems to be conditioning. During matches, after very intense exchanges, he noticeably loses strength and power, making it difficult for him to maintain a high pace. His strength and power tests have been good. We performed a MAP test on the AirBike, where he reached 325 W, followed by a 90-second test at approximately 170% of MAP (around 550 W). He started the test well and initially maintained his power, but after about 50 seconds, his output dropped sharply to around 220 W. He described his legs as feeling “like cotton,” as if they had completely lost their strength. Interestingly, he did not report significant muscle burning. He continued until the end, but could only generate around 220–300 W, with very inconsistent power output. We see a similar pattern during wrestling matches: after very intense exchanges, he suddenly loses power and struggles to maintain his performance. I’d like to better understand what might be limiting his conditioning. How would you interpret this testing profile? Which potential limiters would you investigate first, and what training protocols would you consider prioritizing to improve his ability to sustain and repeat high-intensity efforts? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Thank you very much for your response, Coach! There were three days between the MAP test and the 90-second test. I’ll test the 6 × 6-second protocol following your recommendations in the near future. If possible, I’d also really appreciate it if you could send me the studies you mentioned. I’d be happy to read them and explore this topic in more depth. Thanks again for your time and guidance!

The athlete was familiar with the MAP test, as he had already performed it the week before.
