What’s in a name?
For much of recorded history cultures around the world had naming ceremonies for their young people. These ceremonies or rites of passage gave the young man or young woman an identity within the community. It is still done in many cultures today, including with in the military pilot community. Did you have a community to name you? If not, how could you receive a name?

I have been part of several groups that practice a naming ceremony, and it is a meaningful tradition within those organizations. One group was F3—Faith, Fitness, Fellowship—and another is Men’s Alliance. Both are faith-based organizations that use a similar process. In F3, members meet for a workout. After the workout, a new participant introduces himself and answers questions from the group. More experienced members then suggest nicknames, and the group settles on one that the new member will be known by going forward. Men’s Alliance follows a comparable format, although it also includes a Bible study after the workout. In some cases, it may take several meetings before a nickname is established and becomes accepted by the group. I have also heard of organizations that use rites of passage for young men. These programs often involve a father-and-son experience when a boy reaches a certain stage of maturity. They may go into the woods for an outdoor adventure or team-building event that concludes with a ceremony recognizing the child’s transition into young manhood.
