Sunday March 1st
We’re going live again March 1st at 4:00 PM Central. I’ve had a lot of great questions come in lately, so let’s open it up and talk ball. Drop your questions in this thread so we can hit them live. Also looking forward to welcoming some new guys into the group. If you’re new, jump in here and introduce yourself. Let’s make it a good one.

1. I understand the between Cobra/Colt & Carolina/Cleveland, but what makes you call one of them instead of the other when you are in the same personnel/formation? 2. How do you determine if the TE blocks out to combo with the B, or back to combo with the Tackle on Cobra/Colt? 3. Did Carolina/Cleveland used to be an auto-slice call for the B? If so, why did you change it to be a backside insert? 4. I might lose my QB to transfer this summer. Assuming we don’t get another guy in, what changes do you make and/or formations do you major in, when you have to put an athlete in that role instead of a QB? 5. Would you be willing to share your signal system for calling in plays?

@Jake Hinton I second question #2. Definitely going into spring ball, might be tough to get more than 3-4 formations in at first.
Colt/Cobra vs Carolina/Cleveland?
Where can I find the differences between Colt/Cobra and Carolina/Cleveland spelled out? Thanks guys.

I actually had a question about this too. for Cobra/Colt how does the TE decide whether to combo with tackle or the B when there is a DE in the C-gap and an OLB on the line outside of him? On film, it looks like he usually combos with the Tackle and the B handles the overhang. It seems to work out more often than not, but I just don't know what the reason is.

@Ben Startzer I get what you’re saying, but for your players, that might be complicated. But you have to explain it in a way that makes sense to you too, so it’s a tricky situation. This is how I explain it.. I replace the word “Mike” with “point.” I found that guys wanted to associate Mike with an interior guy all the time. But what makes the most sense to me, is the Point is always that first overhang player to the call and out first combo always works to that guy. If you are a 10P team or don’t want you FB/TEs in the blocking scheme, then the playside Tackle has to create a combo that works out to that overhang player. Then you go down the OL creating the rest of the combos, working to the next backers inside. That is Carolina/Cleveland. If you do have FBs/TEs and want to include them in the blocking scheme, they just start the combo calls to the “Point” man that we discussed before. How they decide on who works with who, I’m not totally sure. That’s a question I’ll be asking on Sunday’s live. But often the FB goes to handle the overhang. The TE and Tackle combo to the next backer inside, and it continues down the line. This way, using the TE & FB is Cobra/Colt. That’s the way I’ve interpreted it and spoken about it when asked anyway. So hopefully that made sense and was helpful. Obviously ask the real expert to make sure though!

Your First Wide Shoot Rule
If a rule needs an exception, it’s not a rule yet. The Wide Shoot is built on simple rules that hold up against pressure. As we go, everything ties back to that idea. Drop your level, position, and experience with the system below so I know how to help you best.

@Nick Codutti you’re not kidding. After being at one school (that I thought I’d be at forever) for 6 years, last couple years have been chaotic. Unfortunately, this off-season is no different. The HC from my current school was fired after the season. I am the only coach from that staff that was offered a job on the new staff, but the new HC is still deciding if I’ll be the OC or just a position coach and head JV coach (my son is the JV QB). Then yesterday, out of the blue, a coach at another school reached out to be to come there as his OC. I’ll be meeting him tomorrow. Luckily, both job possibilities are with new coaches, so wherever I go, it’s a lot more likely that there won’t be so much movement for a while. Either way, if I’m calling plays, I’m diving in completely with the system. Neither team has a ton of talent on the roster, so being systematic and a little different will be a huge help.

@Nick Codutti definitely has been a lot to juggle. I did end up staying at the school I was at last year. It was a tough decision because both places were pretty equal opportunities for me, personally. I ended up doing what I felt was best for my family. My son is already at the school from last year. He’s established himself pretty well as a good, upcoming QB. He’ll be the JV QB this year. And the school is about a 10 min drive instead of a 40+ min drive for my parents. My parents love watching my son play, and me coach. My dad’s health isn’t great so making it easy on them getting to games while he can still go is really important to me. My goal is to install the full system, down to the same verbiage. That way I have hours of film to reference or show to speed up the learning process. It’s just going to take some convincing for a few guys who think that spread is the only way to play. My biggest thing has just been preaching the importance of a system with answers and just getting our best guys in position to be successful.

- I am installing this from scratch this spring. When you installed at a new school, how did your install process work? Non-negotiable formations? Guys learning multiple positions? - Can you give some more detail on Gold/green pass pro? Orange pass pro? (Saw it on a slide) - How do you decide how many WRs get out on boot? Formation? Gameplan? Is there a call to tell them? - Do boot rules change in Bama formation? - Aside from running option, are there other benefits to the “flex” tag? How do you adjust the RB’s read process being closer? - Can you break down the “delay” tag on boot? - What are Harry & Lloyd? Speed option? - Could you draw up and briefly explain a few of the concepts from the Quick pass section?
