Leadership Reflection
"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." Gandalf, played by Sir Ian McKellen in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Gandalf says this to Frodo after Frodo wishes the burden of the Ring had never fallen to him. Gandalf doesn't tell him life is fair. He doesn't promise things will get easier. He reminds him that none of us gets to choose the circumstances we're handed. We only get to choose how we respond. Leadership isn't tested when everything is going your way. It's tested when the timing is terrible, the resources are limited, and the responsibility still lands on your shoulders. Here's the question. Looking back on your life, did your greatest growth come from the opportunities you chose, or from the responsibilities you never asked for?

@Sifu Rafael They came from the responsibilities I never expected. I recently wrote a chapter in an upcoming book. My chapter title is: "Raise Your Hand, Lead Before You're Ready". Coincidentally it is exactly related to your question for today. There were many times I was faced with challenges that I simply had to dig in and overcome

What's one thing you learned this past week that you will do again or avoid in the future?

@Renee Jackson-Smith I was reminded that no matter how hard I work and strive towards and outcome, there are some things that are simply out of my control.
Leadership Wisdom
"Why do we fall, sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up." ~ Alfred Pennyworth, played by Michael Caine in Batman Begins (2005). Alfred isn't talking about superheroes. He's talking about character. He reminds Bruce Wayne that failure isn't the opposite of success. It's part of becoming the person you're meant to be. Too many leaders believe they have to project confidence at all times. They avoid admitting mistakes. They hide failures. They pretend everything is under control. But think about the leaders you've respected the most. Were they the ones who never failed? Or the ones who got back up without pretending they never fell? Here's today's question. Who would you trust more to lead your team... Someone who's never faced adversity... Or someone who has been tested by it? What makes you choose one over the other?

@Sifu Rafael I believe my trials and tribulations in life and in business have made me a strong and resilient leader. Failure in a past business provided valuable lessons for me to use as a business coach. As a martial arts practitioner, each time I was thrown to the mat, I learned a lesson. It's how I got up each and every time that helped to develop my perseverance.

Hello wonderful people! This is Michael Rosa joining from Jacksonville, FL. I'm honored to be included in this powerful group. Leadership matters to me because of the influential leaders before me that impacted my life. As a much younger man, I was fortunate to observe a few outstanding leaders in life and in business. As I developed my own leadership skills, the foundation of their examples led me to the leader I am today. That matters because I enjoy being a leader and mentor to others in passing on the legacy of my mentors. The leadership challenge I face is leading myself on the most valuable and fulfilling course in my own coaching and fractional business. I must endeavor to eliminate the countless distractions of the "experts" that only haver their personal agenda in mind. My leadership goal for this year and beyond, is to locate and identify leaders that need further development in their businesses and help them to achieve their goals, dreams and generational legacies.

Every leader's journey is different. Some lessons come through success. Others come through failure. The truth is, leadership isn't meant to be a solo journey. That's why we built Unified Leadership Academy. Not just to share what we've learned, but to create a place where leaders can learn from one another. Today, the conversation belongs to you. What's one leadership lesson that changed the way you lead, whether you learned it through success or through failure? You never know whose leadership journey your story might change.

@Sifu Rafael great word! I also like the word discipline. As you and I both know Sifu, in martial arts one must be consistent, have discipline and possess the desire to challenge themselves to achieve. Works in business and in life.
