WHERE'S EVERYONE PLAYING THIS WEEKEND?
Thought we'd try something a little different this week! If you've got a gig coming up this weekend, let us know where you're playing, what sort of gig it is and what part of the world you're in. Pub, club, wedding, corporate gig, private party or a three-hour acoustic set in the corner while everyone watches the football. 😂 And if you're NOT gigging this weekend, let us know what you're up to instead. You never know, there might be another Pro Muso member just around the corner who could pop in and say hello! So, who's playing where this weekend? 🎸

🎵 Would You Use a SIMPLE Lyrics App?
I'm working on a new app at the moment and I'd really like some feedback from the gigging musicians in here before I go too far down the rabbit hole. The idea is deliberately simple. A lyrics and setlist app for musicians who DON'T need 400 features and an engineering degree to work out how to use it. 😂 It won't have MIDI or a heap of complicated automation. The focus is on making the things most of us actually need onstage really easy: - Create and organise setlists - Lyrics with simple autoscroll - Easily change the font size - Add chords directly into your lyrics - Clean, simple interface - Quick to set up and easy to use during a gig Basically, build your setlist, open the song, hit scroll and play. I'm already building it, but I'd love some input from people who actually gig. Would you use something like this? And more importantly, what ONE feature would you consider essential in a simple lyrics/setlist app? I'm deliberately trying to avoid feature creep, so don't turn it into the cockpit of a 747 just yet. 😂

@Pro Muso Mate If you have the brains to make the App to your requirements, push on as it will be customised for your needs. Unfortunately as a commercial venture there are already too many choices and it is hard to get people to change, even if your product would be more suitable. Perhaps the best idea is to complete the project and release it free as open source.
Pay Day Super
For all the musos from the land of Oz. Not sure if this subject has been discussed before but I’m interested to know what effect the pay day super rules have had on payments from venues or agents. There is so much confusion out there and quite frankly is causing major trauma for some booking agents. Personally the old cashy will always be a winner but that is getting harder to find. Anyone with thoughts?

The rules as I understand them is that a venue or booking agent must pay you super within 7 days of the work even if you are a sole trader and send an invoice with an ABN. It doesn’t matter how many hours you worked for any particular venue/agent either. While you are not considered an employee for salary or wages you are considered an employee for superannuation purposes under the legislation. Unfortunately venues and accountants all have differing opinions on this matter. I’m far happier to take cash but 80% of venues I have played want an invoice to write off the entertainment expense. The new laws mean they are require they pay super on top of that. To that end some venues are reducing the amount being paid so that the super is taken out of your fee so you end ups with less in your hand.

@Paul Trevaskis G’day Paul. I’m across all that info; however it is the complication of having to pay it that is effecting some business. I know they always should have, but the change to payday super has highlighted the fact it must be paid and suddenly businesses are bringing it up and wanting to pay the same amount as before, with the amount being split between fee and super. I’ve had some venues go to paying cash, some who pay super and some who ignore the whole thing. Personally I dont need the complication either. I’m retired and have had to open a new super fund just for the pittance of super to live in. I just think the government should have sole traders provide their own super. Being considered an employee, just for super purposes is ridiculous. Anyway that’s my two bobs worth.

best of luck…enjoy yourself
Sublime or ridiculous?
All channels talk about filling the repertoire with "bangers" - song that are recognisable, and have broad appeal across the world and different age groups. And audiences truly enjoy them - leave out "Brown-Eyed Girl" at your own peril. I've noticed how pub entertainers all play the same songs, and I've sometimes played bingo - ticking them off the checklist. Last night I watched someone play 12 of these core songs in a row, and it was all so predictable. Standards are useful, but I can't help but feel that a set only composed of bangers becomes a caricature of a gig. It's like having a magic power - it should be used wisely. How do you keep from sounding like everyone else, or a Spotify playlist?

I exclusively play weissenborn guitar and enjoy bringing the unique sound of the instrument to audiences. My style is definitely “chill” and certainly suits a dining environment. Despite this I still need to keep audiences attentive by feeding in versions of well known songs amongst those I personally love from the world of acoustic slide. I originally thought that I wouldn’t go back and play “Brown Eyed Girl” again but have now found that playing a unique interpretation on the weissenborn of classics just like this has only improved my slide playing and is appreciated by those listening. On a side note I have amazed myself that after 50 plus years of playing guitar, that learning some theory in the last few years has markedly improved my playing, enabling me to identify and play melody lines within songs.
