Answer to yesterday's was -25. DIFFICULTY: HARD On Atlantic shores, dogwhelks living where predatory crabs are abundant generally have thicker shells than dogwhelks living where crabs are scarce. Dogwhelks can thicken newly formed shell material after detecting chemical cues from crabs, so some shell variation is environmentally induced. In one study, however, researchers collected unhatched egg capsules from crab-rich and crab-poor shores and raised the hatchlings under identical, cue-free laboratory conditions. Hatchlings whose mothers came from crab-rich shores still developed thicker shells. The researchers interpreted this persistent difference as evidence that shell thickness primarily reflects inherited genetic differences between the populations rather than effects of parental environments carried into offspring. Which finding, if true, would most directly challenge the researchers’ interpretation?
