First weeks using centers
Has anyone started the school year by only opening about half of the centers during the first week or two? Last year, I had all of the centers open right away, and it felt a little hectic. The children didn't know where everything belonged, and toys ended up everywhere. I'm wondering if opening only half of the centers at first would make it easier for my para and me to teach the children how to use the materials appropriately and where everything goes during cleanup. Has anyone tried this strategy, or something similar? I'd love to hear how it worked for you!

The children are always so excited to play at the beginning of the year that sometimes it's hard to keep centers closed! I find that I approach this differently depending on the children's needs and independence level each year. If you have children returning from the previous year, they will probably already know and understand how the centers work. I think it is important to have adult support to help children learn the expectations of each center. Having adults close by to guide play, teach expectations, and observe how the children are using the materials are important.
Which curriculum are you going to be using?
Hey teachers!! 🍎 Would love to know which curriculum or approach you’re using this coming school year. This will help teachers find others using the same curriculum, for that extra support. 🫶🏼 If you don't see your curriculum, let us know in the comments which one you're using!

I used the Creative Curriculum for years, but we will be using the Assessment, Evaluation and Planning System (AEPS) beginning this year.

CC has always been in my heart; it still secretly drives what I do. But as standards and expectations change, we needed something different to meet the needs of all our children.

Same name
What do you all do when you have multiple children with the same name. Do you just say their first name or do you say their first and last name or just first and last initial.

It doesn't happen often, but we have used the first and last name. One year I had 3 children with the same first name. Of the little guys only responded to his LAST name.

Be yourself. It's not about the "Pinterest" looking classroom; it's about building a community of learners. Be flexible. The very best and most meaningful learning opportunities happen when you least expect it-be ready to embrace those opportunities.
