Two new videos: "salty animals" & "out-of-bed-looks"
Hi all, So I have made my next two videos! In a pretty lengthy/dense one, I followed your advice (@Matthias) to 'do something' while I talk. That's during the salty animal video. In the other, shorter one I'm just acting silly and showing off my makeup while rambling about whether animals have 'out of bed looks'. Feedback is welcome! 😊 I think for a while in the upcoming time - both on Instagram and on Tiktok - I will likely find myself in the 'algorithm jail' with super low views/engagement. But I will hope stuff will land - somewhere, somehow, at some point sooner or later! I'll try to be patient here and not lose my motivation. ;) For now I aim to post regularly. The content comprises the more authentic videos (striving to do 2 per week if I can find the time) and I add to those with more simple stuff in between (using templates, memes, trending audio, etc. - but with own texts and materials) within a similar biology/science theme. 🤷‍♀️ Does that sound like something that I could do to build some sort of foundation, you think? Are there things that I am overlooking, or that I could best do differently in these early stages? Cheers!

Wow, you're on fire 🔥 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 For science communication, consistency is everything. It builds trust with your audience and is the fastest way to improve. Practice makes perfect, so I absolutely endorse your plan. I don’t really believe in “algorithm jail.” One high-engagement reel can revive a whole profile and pull up older content. Nothing you post is wasted. Let’s aim for that breakout reel sometime. Early on, experiment with formats. Once we find one that people love, you love, and is sustainable, stick to it. Great that you already implemented the 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘭 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘥 ✅It’s more engaging, but it needs balance. Create subconscious curiosity without distracting from the message. This works best with very simple, neutral actions (makeup, hair, simple lab work, etc.). See: https://www.instagram.com/dr.cal.ur.science.pal/reel/DQ5d4C0iK6Q/ 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 - 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹 Great concepts, as usual. Main improvement: Simplify One reel = one idea. One hook. Cut things off-topic as much as possible (𝘤𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘵). Your first reel, for example, could easily be three reels (flamingos, iguanas, sea turtles). 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝟭 - 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 Love the concept! I worked with Olive Ridleys in Costa Rica too, and their overly dramatic “crying” faces struck me so much I almost made a reel about it myself. Suggested structure: - Hook: “Sea turtles look like they’re crying on the beach. But they’re not.” - Immediately explain why this happens and what function it serves. - End with a short personal comment. Right now, once I’m hooked on turtles, but the reel shifts to flamingos and iguanas. That risks viewers scrolling away who want the answer promised by the hook. I’d also skip: - Saying you’re a biologist in your kitchen (in this case it’s already obvious when you say you studied turtles in Costa Rica) - The jar of salt at the end (it’s a bit of an unclear payoff) 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝟮 - 𝗢𝘂𝘁-𝗼𝗳-𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀
👀 Two of my experimental reels - curious what y'all think!
Hi everyone! For tomorrow I have made 2 experimental reels. 🎥 A bit of context: I want to create content that attracts both people who already love nature/biology, as well as people who might not think they do yet but who I could perhaps lure in. My goal isn’t (necessarily) to land gigs, but to see first if I can even reach a like-minded crowd in the online void. And to educate and entertain while doing so. I thus chose to first try creating in English, but I’ll regularly mention I’m a Dutch biologist in the videos. I'm curious to see how that plays out in terms of audience reach (i.e. whether I'll reach enough Dutchies as well). 🌍 These two first trial reels are: 🐝 Why politicians 'should be more like bees' 🎉 POV: being a dorky biology PhD at a party I’m still experimenting with my tone, my storytelling and my editing style in these early stages. The direction I’m exploring is intentionally a bit weird, personal and playful. I hope this will attract the right kind of goofy sciencey crowds, but I am curious to see how it lands here first. 🤓 I already adjusted my Instagram bio in accordance with what I'm aiming to achieve too: "🇳🇱 Dutch Biologist with a Twist! 🧬 Turns out wild animals & DNA expose the nonsense of humanity 🎥 Talks | Reels | Arts 🎤 Collab? → 📩 info@wilddna.nl" I haven’t posted the reels yet. Any feedback on audience positioning, hooks, creators I might align with, caption strategy, how to deal with the initial cringey phase, etc. is very welcome. Thanks and see you guys tomorrow! 👋

Apologies that I wasn’t able to give all the feedback I would’ve liked to during the last call, as we had already run over by half an hour. We're thinking of maybe trying a slightly different structure going forward, for example one longer session (2 hours instead of 1), or two calls per week: one focused on a lesson around topics you’d like to dive into, and another purely dedicated to feedback on your reels. Let me meditate on this 🧘‍♂️ That said, I really like these reels. It’s great that you’re already thinking about your audience; that’s one of the most important things as a content creator. There this famous saying in content creation: “If you try to make content for everyone, you end up connecting with no one”, so carving out a niche early is a great idea. The reels are playful, interesting and express your personality -> Authenticity ✅ It reminds me of the "I'm a scientist and let me explain you something more complex reels-niche" like this video https://www.instagram.com/dr.cal.ur.science.pal/reel/DQ5d4C0iK6Q/ (one of the reasons it works so well if the parallel story line (she's doing stuff while explaining) and the fact she has a lab coat, which adds to her credibility) 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝟭: • Love this hook, it’s super interesting and instantly pulls you in • The editing is really good. I do think for the future, the sound could be simplified a bit. There are moments where a lot is happening at once (music, narration, sound effects, background noise), which can feel slightly busy. Cleaning up the voice audio would help: you could use a voice isolator or even an AI voice enhancer. I can show you how to do this later if you like. • As we discussed, I would end it with ‘Can you imagine if our world leaders would just dance?’. It’s also great to finish on a question, giving people a reason to comment -> Comment drive Views ✅ 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝟮: This concept is really fun and relatable, I’ve also been at a lot of parties just talking about animals. You’re great at explaining things, and the storytelling feels natural and confident. Also love the intentional weirdness, as we discussed that’s definitely something that works on social media -> Oddity (cognitive friction = Something doesn’t immediately resolve in the viewer’s brain. So they stay.) ✅ A great example of this is @Indianajoseee

Great, you have your first TikTok follower! Love the proactiveness, great to see! I really recommend everyone to post their videos on both Instagram and TikTok. They’re quite different platforms, but it barely takes extra effort to post it twice, and a whole new audience might be waiting for you there.
Tiktok/Insta video - cheetah hunt 👀
Hey hey! Here’s a draft of a video I ve been wanting to make. My goal for social is to approach the broader traveling community - with emphasis on volunteering and meaningful life experiences. I am a bit torn on what footage I should include, I have some more graphic videos and photos (I’ll attach one too for reference). Personally I would love to show it, as I don’t want to sugar coat the nature of this experience but I am honestly not sure if it would get taken down by the platform or reported for being graphic. Looking forward to some more opinions and perhaps thoughts on script improvements 🐆

Hey Amalia, this is a Really strong video. There’s a lot of potential here if it’s framed right. As we discussed on the call, I’d really lean into one clear story: the hunt and the kill, and how you experienced it as a wildlife volunteer. That’s clearly what you wanted to tell, and it’s absolutely not a problem for Meta (FB and IG). Just take a look at this viral page, which is all about the "dark side" https://www.instagram.com/natureismetal/ I’d suggest writing a short script that focuses on: • how long you waited to witness this • how it felt seeing it unfold in real time • how intense or surreal it was to actually be there • the fact that you found yourself rooting for Nashipaya on the one hand, but being conflicted about this. Keep it reel -> Authenticity ✅ Those personal details you shared yesterday are gold. They’re what make this more than just “cool wildlife footage”. For the structure: Start with a strong hook. For example: the wide shot of the cheetah with the antelope that zooms in, with something like “I can’t believe I just witnessed this” or “This is the real side of wildlife conservation” to stop people from scrolling. Then cut to you on camera and explain the context: that you were out as a wildlife conservation volunteer, tracking Nashipaya for hours, waiting, and then suddenly witnessing the kill. I’d recommend keeping it tight in the beginning ✅ Later on, as you mentioned wanting to move into the travel vlogger niche, you can absolutely make longer and more complex reels. For example, this girl does it really well: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DKfeTz1uM6q/?hl=enShe built her following over several years with very consistent, high quality footage before getting these steady view numbers. She’s not really chasing virality, more posting, learning, and improving on her craft. One extra tip for the future (also a note to myself): if you can film the first sentence of your story in real time, on location, it usually performs much better. It feels more raw and authentic. You can see that in the reel I linked as well. For this one though, a full voiceover will work totally fine.

Great, I think it would perform really well in that case. Let’s aim to have the video finished by the next call, so we can post it next week. You can post the script on the wall sometime this week if that works for you!

Heres the updated reel, foley could use some fine tuning but it's mostly together.

Hey Ollie, This is a world of difference from your first edit, nice job man! The feedback we discussed: - Use shadow on the text to make it slightly more readable --> Cognitive ease [optimize UX (user experience)] ✅ - Really nice squirrel nibble sound effects, adds a whole new dimension to the video ✅ - Download any song you like from youtube with an online downloader (I use Tubly downloader which is a super convenient plugin that costs $17.88 per year, but there are tons of free "Youtube to mp3" websites out there) - Come up with a simpler caption at the start. Suggestions: ‘Got my camera wet for this shot:’ 'Waited in the rain for these squirrels' ‘Soaked my camera just for this shot’ ‘Dodging the rain to get the perfect shot’ 'Nearly sacrificed my camera to capture these squirrels 🌧️' 'Nearly sacrificed my camera for the perfect squirrel shot 🌧️' ‘Never let the rain stop a good shot’ 'Almost drowned my camera for these squirrels' Or some version of these you like most For the rest it's really good, honestly! 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. Your challenge for next week: post this reel 😏🏋️‍♀️
5th Call - Proud of you guys
Just wanted to say I’m genuinely impressed by the videos you’ve already made already by the 5th call! Beautiful shots, great ideas, super creative! What I’m noticing though, and this is very normal, is that many of you seem to be your own biggest obstacle right now. Feeling shy. Cringing. Thinking it’s not good enough yet. The biggest hurdle right now isn’t skill or talent. You clearly have that. It’s simply starting to post, then improving by posting, not before. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗹𝘆.That's just the facts. Also, sometimes freedom just matters more than polish and I remind myself of this wise goat. Now let’s get it out there soon.
