In today's industry is there still an "age limit" to when you should stop trying to be an artist? Or is it truly unlimited?

A friend of mine has had some success with breaking artists on the college radio in the past. He mentioned that acts like Mims and Bonecrusher garnering substantial buzzes on the college radio scene. Since college radio isn't controlled by the payola system that governs most terrestrial radio and Top 40 stations, the independents have a better shot at pushing their singles on these stations.
