Orbicularis Oris
Check out this image of the muscles around the mouth. Can you find the Orbicularis Oris? This set of muscles helps us to make "kissy" lips and to create our flute embouchure. It draws the lips together like you're cinching up a drawstring bag.

Interesting! My teacher told me all those muscles also around your nose and mouth are important. There are so many muscles around our mouth and nose that are involved to get a more flexible embouchure. Also the jaw is very important. Stay far away from the smile embouchure i ve learned. But i think that is probably different in different schools. I m taught french school.
Teach Us Something💯💯💯
This group is not just about me teaching what I've learned... It's about us sharing what we've learned and supporting each other! Let's start a trend of teaching each other. What's something that you learned in your life, maybe even outside of music, that is helpful to your improv journey? Next, go share your unique voice in the INTROS CONTEST (and get a chance to win a private duet session with me!) and vote on your favorite!

Atomic Flute Habits
What's one small flute technique you'd like to develop a good habit id practicing in 2026? Join me Sunday thru Tuesday at 9:30am CT for "The Atomic Flutist" where I'll go live with my plan to get back in tip top flute shape and invite you to play along too.

Help with staying relaxed while playing
Does anyone have any advice or tips on how to stay relaxed when you are stressed while playing? Most of the time I am fine and not stressed, but I just finished practicing Amazing Grace in all the keys and I was feeling stressed about it and was gripping my flute too hard and my hands hurt. I guess my brain thinks that gripping my flute will help to make it sound better. Would appreciate any tips or tricks. Thanks!

Yes i was playing the viola for 1 dau for ecample and i was gripping too much with my left hand. That causes pain. So i leave it in the case. Take a day off and be patient and kind for yourself. Good luck!
