Fiction Books are just as important than Non-fiction books
I feel whenever we scroll on social media and we look at all these self-help creators they always talk about non-fiction books and how these books “have changed their life.” Now I appreciate and do love self-help books and normal non-fiction books but I don’t believe anyone appreciates the fiction books as well. Yes there is booktok where readers are sharing their thoughts, ideas and opinions on certain book releases and what not but in terms of the self help part of tiktok or Instagram they’re still HIGHLY under appreciated. Self help creators always push for us to read these nonfiction books and although they are helpful, self help books are only useful if the reader is actually applying those key lessons from the book into their lifestyle and let’s be honest most of us don’t. I read this post on Instagram which I believed to be interesting and I believe Nat has spoken about it too in one of her posts I’m not sure (correct me if I’m wrong Nat). Though I have read that fiction books are just as important because you’re learning different perspectives of the character, you’re exploring different themes and ideas that can actually be applied in real life. It helps with understanding empathy, compassion, friendship, family dynamics, relationships and so forth. I believe in the self help community, fiction books are so under appreciated because they’re fiction and according to them bring no “knowledge or life lessons to learn from” but I believe if you truly believe in self development then balancing both non fiction and fiction can do you way more favours in life. It might even give you inspiration to dream more and love your life more adventurously!! T least thats how I feel. I also believe that it expands your mind so creatively as well. What do you all think? Do you also believe that fiction books are highly under appreciated or do you feel differently?

@Akanksha P yes and sometimes the characters may have complicated thoughts or background story that makes you either empathise with the Character or despise them. I feel as thought talking about the storyline and characters and their relationships bring waayyyy more lessons and discussions then any non-fiction book can.
The cost of constant connection
When’s the last time you gave something, or someone, your full, undivided focus? I came across a study (Sindermann et al., 2020) showing that being highly online is linked to lower emotional intelligence and higher impulsivity. Then the harder it becomes to stay grounded and connect in real life. I’ve noticed this in myself lately, feeling a bit dull and disconnected. Do you ever feel like the internet is quietly dulling your emotions? How do you notice it showing up in your life, and how do you fix it (without fully logging off)?

I followed Tam Kaur for a while and she does amazing videos for advice. I’m not like a cult follower of hers by any means but she’s helped me a lot genuinely. One of the things that has personally helped me is to journal both no prompts and with prompts. It’s really helped me in terms of self awareness and having a more beautiful relationship with myself. I also make it known to my friends that if we are hanging out one on one in person whether at my home or at a cafe that we both put our phone away and have a conversation. We make sure to focus on each other. If you genuinely care about emotional connection, communication and relationships then you have to go out of your way to make it known or make it your goal to connect more. True friends and real family will put their phone away for you to have conversations. I’ve noticed that having technology away has really brought me and my friends closer together. We organise random road trips, house visits and fondu and charcuterie board nights together. Sometimes it’s all four of us or sometimes it’s just the two of us. I think it’s all really about effort in making those emotional connections as well.

@Nat Notes personally most of my journalling prompts are goals for the day in the morning and then reflection at night time. The other journalling prompts I do not do them everyday because as you said it defeats the whole purpose of them. I try to actually do journalling prompts based on astrology/moon cycle I’ve seen that, that’s been helpful and introspective and the more shadow work journal prompts I would say I do them on a monthly or bi monthly basis. I do understand where you’re coming from though I think everyone just has a different system on how they do or don’t do journalling. Non-prompt journalling for me is for when I’m feeling overwhelmed with high emotions and I need to get everything on paper just to get it out of my system you know? I hope you enjoy your trip! It’s so wonderful when you make it a no phone trip it really brings in interesting discussions and what not.
Religion Vs Spirituality
What’s the difference between the two and do you believe both ideas can overlap? I believe they’re both different but both can overlap. I believe religion gives more structured base understanding of how life should be lived according to “society” while spirituality is more of the inner workings of the person and their soul.

@Nat Notes I balance the two as well. Personally I’m Hindu and Hinduism doesn’t necessarily have a structure in comparison to other religions. They don’t have super strict rules as within Hinduism there are different paths you can choose to follow because we believe that whatever path you choose to follow all of us will still end up in the same place or reach the same level of Moksha (Liberation). I’m still doing more research on Hinduism I’m doing it because I want to have a more solid understanding of my own religion as I hadn’t before. Hinduism is compromised of various different philosophies so I’ll be sharing more in different posts as the more I learn. I’m curious to see what conversations will be said and shared.

@Nandini Kumawat you summed this up beautifully. I’m currently learning more and more for myself just to educate myself in our religion but also to connect with the goddess a bit deport within myself and outside.
