After nursing college, I became a private duty palliative care nurse. Then came rehab nursing. Next I spent several years working for a neuropsychiatrist (a doctor who treats problems where the brain, nerves, and mental health meet), as both his nurse and office manager. 𝗜 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲: 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲. He was a good man, who did everything he could for his patients, but he did not speak in a language they could understand. Many of our patients lived with pain. He would tell them their pain was “in their head,” without explaining what he meant. Some left feeling hurt and unheard. The day after appointments, I had a lot of calls. Patients got home, went over what the doctor said, and could not make sense of it. They had health questions, and they needed someone to explain the health information in words that made sense. 💛 That is why I built Ask Lynne’s Health Exchange.
