Masculine or Feminine — The Ending Rule
Salut! Today you're learning a rule that will help you guess the gender of a French noun — not always, but more often than you'd think! Video below Important to know before we start: this rule only covers about 35% of French nouns. For everything else, you just have to memorize the gender — that's just how French works! Presque toujours masculin -age → le fromage, le voyage, le paysage -ment → le gouvernement, le moment, le changement -eau / -au → le château, le bureau, le gâteau -isme → le capitalisme, le tourisme, le réalisme Presque toujours féminin -tion / -sion → la nation, la décision, la situation -té → la liberté, la société, la réalité -ance / -ence → la différence, la distance, la patience -ure → la culture, la peinture, la structure When you spot one of these endings, this rule is right 90 to 99% of the time. But for most words you'll just have to learn the gender as you go — which is exactly what the Anki deck is for! (Make sure to always add Le/La/un/une when you create an anki card!) Can you make a few sentences using today's words? Write them in the comments below!

C'est incroyable combien de profs de français enseigne les mots sans le genre. Ça, je ne comprends pas. Mais, une prof m'a dit que les problèmes sont toujours masculins, mais les solutions sont féminines. 🤣
À, En, Au, Aux — Cities, Countries and Regions
Salut! Today you're learning which little word to use when talking about where you are or where you're going! Video below Villes — always à Je vais à Montréal / à Tokyo / à Paris Pays féminin (ending in -e) — en en France / en Italie / en Chine ⚠️ le Mexique, le Cambodge — exceptions, they're masculine Pays masculin — au au Canada / au Japon / au Maroc Pays pluriel — aux aux États-Unis / aux Pays-Bas Régions et provinces — same logic en Ontario / en Californie / en Bretagne au Québec / au Texas / au Yukon aux Laurentides Cities always get à. For everything else — en for feminine, au for masculine, aux for plural! Can you make a few sentences using today's words? Write them in the comments below!

Peut-être c'est le sujet d'une autre leçon, mais si on rentre d'un pays féminin, est-ce qu'on dit par exemple je rentre de la France, ou je rentre de France? Il me semble qu'il y a une règle là-dessus.
When NOT to Make a Liaison
Salut! You've learned when liaison happens — today you're learning when it doesn't, which is just as important for sounding natural! Video below Liaison is forbidden after: -Groupe nominal verbe Mon chat est beau Le train est vite Le crayon est bleu -Et — never liaised Un chat et un chien -Un H aspiré (Both silent H and H aspiré are silent, so you just got to magically know by practicing) Je monte en haut (Also every time I read about H aspiré they give the example of Les haricots, and they say its forbidden, but all my life I heard that liaison pronounced, so maybe France is different than Québec for this particular one) -Le S/X apporter par Tu Tu aimes aller au Cinéma Tu veux un peu de gateau? -Pronom interrogatifs Comment était le film? Quand es-tu arrivé? Exception: Comment allez-vous ? -A proper noun ou un nom au singulier Paris est belle (no liaison on Paris) Le chat arrive L'étudiant est grand -Quelqu'un Quelqu'un arrive Write some forbidden liaison in the comments below!

Salut Etien! Avec les haricots, l'OQLF dit que la liaison est interdite, mais que beaucoup de personnes ici la font quand même. Autre chose - Quand est-ce que tu es arrivé? Je pense qu'on fait la liaison ici, non?
Les Liaisons
Salut! Today you're learning one of the keys to sounding natural in French — liaison, where a normally silent consonant gets pronounced when the next word starts with a vowel. Video below vous êtes / vous avez / ils ont / nous avons — liaison with être and avoir ils arrivent / elles arrivent — liaison with ils and elles verbs un ami / mon ami / mon école — liaison with un, mon, ton, son bon appétit / grand homme / petit ami — liaison with bon, grand, petit les amis / des idées / mes enfants / nos amis — liaison with les, des, mes, nos dans un appartement / en arrivant — liaison after prepositions très important / plus utile — liaison with adverbs deux amis / trois amis — liaison with numbers tout est prêt / tout à coup — liaison with tout petit à petit — a classic fixed expression The rule to remember: the silent consonant at the end of a word wakes up when the next word starts with a vowel or silent h. It's what gives French that smooth, flowing sound! Do you know of some other liaison that I didn't put there ? Write them in the comments below!

Tu as utilisé l'exemple "petit ami". Rien à voir avec la liaison, mais est-ce que c'est commun au Québec au lieu de chum, blonde, etc?

@Etien Rousseau Ok, merci!
Words That Connect Ideas in Time
Salut! Today you're learning the words that give your sentences structure — showing when things happen, in what order, and how ideas contrast. Video below Pendant — During Depuis — Since Ensuite — Then Puis — After that D'abord — First Enfin — Finally Pourtant — However Quand même — Still Tandis que — Whereas Alors que — Whereas A quick note on the last two: tandis que and alors que both translate as "whereas" but alors que often carries a stronger sense of contrast or surprise, while tandis que is more about two things happening in parallel. Can you make a few sentences using today's words? Write them in the comments below!

Etien, je trouve que "durant" est utilisé au Québec plus souvent que "pendant". Peut-être c'est plutôt à l'écrit? Qu'est-ce que tu en penses?

Je partage mon temps entre Toronto et Montréal. J'ai étudié le français de France mais je voudrais maitriser l'accent et les expressions québécoises.
