I watched a really good video from @Lydia Wilmsen today about community growth. One of the big ideas was: Don’t lead based on where your community is today. Lead based on where you want it to go. I really liked that. The practical takeaway I wrote down for myself was: Take the actions a 500-member community owner would take. Not because you already have 500 members… But because that’s how you become the person capable of leading 500 members. For example… I still get imposter syndrome. I still question whether I can actually build something big. I still have moments where I wonder if people will keep joining. A couple weeks ago I went 16 days without a new member 😅 But during that stretch, I didn’t stop posting. I didn’t stop helping members. I didn’t stop improving the community. I didn’t stop running experiments. Because that’s probably not what a 500-member community owner would do either. The more I build this community, the more I realize leadership isn’t something that magically appears once you hit a certain number. You grow into it by practicing it. You become a leader by leading. You become confident by taking action before you feel confident. You become experienced by helping people before you feel like an expert. A lot of community owners are stuck thinking: 👉 “Nobody will pay me.” 👉 “I need a bigger audience.” 👉 “I need more information.” Maybe. But maybe what you actually need is more reps. More conversations. More attempts. More proof. More action. The people who eventually build great communities aren’t necessarily the smartest. They’re the ones who keep showing up long enough to become the person capable of leading one. So here’s a question: What’s one thing a 500-member community owner would do this week… that you’re currently avoiding? 👇
