Implausible or not what’s the truth?
A question for you guys: How plausible does a high concept thriller need to be? ALL Dan Browns books cross the line and are not speculative? So are many other best sellers. Does Gone Girl have an improbable plot? Is Girl on a train is far fetched and highly coincidental? And, Where the Crawdads Sing…I mean, really? But it works great doesn’t it?! So is it ok the cross the line a bit with an exciting plot? And does the reader care? I’m asking for a friend!!!

I think it depends so much on the reader. I had a problem with all the books above I'm afraid because of the implausibility problem. I thought the first two were well written and enjoyed the read, but found them ultimately disappointing because of the implausibility of the outcomes, found Crawdads irritating throughout as was so implausible - having been homeschooled away from society myself I think I had more understanding of the issues than the author did! However, at some point, agents, publishers and editors must have read these books and not cared about the implausibility as much as I did, so I reckon it's a risk you've got to weigh up🤣. I was once told that I shouldn't write a book about magic because magic is just silly and no one believes in it. So there you go!
