New course is live: KNM
The KNM course is now up in the Classroom, for members. KNM (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij) is the part that tests how daily life in the Netherlands works. Good news: it's the most learnable part of the whole exam, and many people pass it first. It's a great place to get an early win. The one rule that gets the most answers right: choose the normal Dutch answer, not the answer from your home country. That trap catches more people than any hard word. Inside you'll find the seven themes, how the picture questions work, the mistakes to avoid, and twelve practice questions with the answers explained. Have a look, then tell me here: which KNM theme do you find hardest, health, work, housing, school, money, rights? Post one word below.

Which part worries you most?
Spreken, Luisteren, Lezen, Schrijven, KNM or ONA? Post the one that scares you most, and why in one line. You will see you are not the only one.

@Jea B Precies, Jea, en je legt het zelf al goed uit: bij spreken heb je die denktijd niet. Het geheim is korte zinnen, dan hoef je niet zoveel vooruit te denken. Goed geschreven trouwens!
Say it twice, out loud, within a day
The single best speaking habit. Every new Dutch phrase you learn, say it out loud twice within 24 hours. A phrase you only read stays asleep. A phrase you said out loud wakes up when you need it.

@Jea B Graag gedaan, Jea! Probeer het maar meteen: zeg deze zin vandaag twee keer hardop. Zo blijft hij hangen. Fijn dat je meedoet!

@Jea B Precies goed, Jea! Dat hardop meespreken bij Duolingo maakt echt het verschil. Ga zo door!
Welcome. Start here.
New here? Doing your inburgering and not sure where to begin? You're in the right place. Two things to do today, two minutes total: 1. Open the Start Here course (in Classroom). It explains the whole exam in plain English, no Dutch needed. 2. Introduce yourself below. Three lines is enough: - Where are you from, and where do you live now? - Which exam part worries you most? - Why do you need to pass? Not sure how to start? "Hi, I'm ... from ... I'm most worried about ... and I need to pass because ..." Mistakes are welcome here, always. Read one other intro and say hello. That's where a community starts. I read every post and answer every one. Lucas

@Jea B Hi Jea, welcome from Germany! You don't need the inburgering to be here, wanting to lift your Dutch to a higher level is a great reason to join. Klein foutje: "op een hoog niveau," niet "hoge." Verder heel netjes geschreven. Fijn dat je er bent!

@Jea B Haha, precies! Dat gevoel voor hoog en hoge komt vanzelf met de tijd. Goed bezig, Jea!
