๐ŸŒฟ Growing Green Onions Indoors โ€” No Garden Bed Required
If you love the flavor of fresh green onions but think you need a full garden bed to grow them, think again! These versatile, easygoing plants are practically made for indoor growing. With just a sunny windowsill, a few everyday items, and a little water, you can have a constant supply of crisp, flavorful green onions right in your kitchen. Green onions (also called scallions) are one of the simplest crops to regrow. No complicated setup, no special lights, and no garden soil required. They grow fast, take up very little space, and thrive in the same indoor conditions that make you comfortable: warm, bright, and cozy. Plus, theyโ€™re a cut-and-come-again crop. Meaning you can snip the tops and watch them regrow again and again! You can start with store-bought green onions: ๐Ÿ. Trim off the green tops, leaving 2โ€“3 inches of the white bulb with roots attached. ๐Ÿ. Place the bulbs upright in a small glass or jar with about an inch of water โ€” just enough to cover the roots. ๐Ÿ‘. Set the glass on a sunny windowsill. ๐Ÿ’. Change the water every few days to keep it fresh. Within a week, youโ€™ll see new green growth shooting up โ€” and you can start harvesting again in as little as 10โ€“14 days. ๐Ÿ’ก ๐‘ƒ๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ ๐‘‡๐‘–๐‘: Once theyโ€™ve regrown a few times, transplant them into a small pot of soil for even longer life. ๐ŸŒฟ ๐Ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐Ÿ: ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐’๐ž๐ž๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐จ๐ญ๐ฌ If youโ€™d rather start fresh: ๐Ÿ. Fill a small container (4โ€“6 inches deep) with potting mix. ๐Ÿ. Sow seeds about ยฝ inch apart and cover lightly with soil. ๐Ÿ‘. Mist gently to moisten and place in a bright, sunny spot. ๐Ÿ’. Keep the soil evenly damp (not soggy). Seedlings will appear in about a week. Once they reach 6โ€“8 inches tall, snip what you need โ€” theyโ€™ll regrow from the base! โ˜€๏ธ ๐‹๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ & ๐“๐ž๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž * Place your jar or pot near a south- or west-facing window. * Green onions love bright, indirect sunlight โ€” about 6 hours a day. * Keep them in temperatures between 60โ€“75ยฐF (most homes are perfect).

Potatoโ€™s do great in pots! I think thatโ€™s why theyโ€™re called POT-atoes. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ They seem to pop up everywhere but when I plant them, I like to use half barrels. 1) we have terrible gophers where I live in NorCal 2) you can keep adding leaves and straw and compost to fill it deeper as the plants grow taller and the tubers fill the whole thing 3) easy to harvest by tipping the pot right over
Fall Equinox โ€“ First Day of Autumn ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒฑ
The Fall Equinox marks one of natureโ€™s most magical moments: the official first day of autumn. This year, as the sun crosses the celestial equator, day and night become nearly equal in length. For gardeners, itโ€™s more than a date on the calendarโ€”itโ€™s a signal of changing rhythms in both the sky and our container gardens. The Fall Equinox happens around September 22โ€“23 each year, when the Earth tilts in such a way that sunlight is evenly distributed across the planet. After this point, the Northern Hemisphere leans away from the sun, bringing shorter days, cooler temperatures, and the gradual shift from summer to autumn. Sage, Thyme & Rosemary: A Fall Herb Trio for Containers
When the cooler air of fall rolls in, many gardeners assume itโ€™s time to pack away the trowels and let their gardens rest. But autumn is actually prime season for some of the most flavorful and hardy herbs aroundโ€”sage, thyme, and rosemary. This aromatic trio doesnโ€™t just survive fall; they thrive in containers and bring flavor, fragrance, and greenery well into the season. * ๐’๐š๐ ๐ž: Its silvery, textured leaves add visual interest, while the earthy flavor is a fall kitchen staple, perfect for roasted vegetables and stuffing. * ๐“๐ก๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ž: Compact, resilient, and flavorful, thyme fills in beautifully around other plants and tolerates cooler nights. * ๐‘๐จ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ: This Mediterranean favorite loves a sunny spot and doubles as an ornamental container โ€œthrillerโ€ with its upright growth. Together, they create a mini herb garden thatโ€™s practical, beautiful, and incredibly fragrant. ๐ŸŒฑ ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ซ ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐“๐ข๐ฉ๐ฌ * ๐‚๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‘๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ญ: A 12โ€“14 inch wide container works well for all three if planted together. Make sure it has excellent drainage. * ๐’๐จ๐ข๐ฅ: Use a well-draining potting mix with added sand or perlite. These herbs donโ€™t like โ€œwet feet.โ€ * ๐’๐ฎ๐ง๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ: Aim for 6+ hours of direct sun dailyโ€”especially crucial for rosemary. * ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ : Keep the soil slightly moist but never soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering again. * ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ : Snip regularly to encourage new growth and prevent woody stems. ๐Ÿฒ ๐…๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐…๐ฅ๐š๐ฏ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Š๐ข๐ญ๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ง One of the joys of these herbs is their perfect pairing with fall cooking. Try: * ๐’๐š๐ ๐ž: Toss fresh leaves into butternut squash soup or brown butter pasta. * ๐“๐ก๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ž: Add sprigs to roasted root vegetables or chicken dishes. * ๐‘๐จ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ: Infuse olive oil, or use whole sprigs for roasting meats and potatoes. Together, they bring warmth and depth to autumn meals. ๐ŸŒฟ ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐œ๐ค ๐“๐ข๐ฉ Bring your container indoors before the first frost (especially rosemary, which is less cold-hardy than sage or thyme). Place them in a bright window, and theyโ€™ll keep your kitchen stocked with fresh herbs all winter long.

Yes! They might not grow much during the winter but they are getting established so in the spring they can flourish.
