Is it just me, or is January the longest month known to horsey humans? We’re only halfway through and yet it feels like we’ve lived several emotional lifetimes already. It’s still dark, the mud has strong opinions, and spring feels like a rumour someone started to be kind. If you’re feeling a bit flat or unmotivated, you’re not doing anything wrong. This is just January being January. Lower your expectations a touch this week. Small wins matter. Getting to the yard counts. Grooming your horse and calling it a win definitely counts. Lighter evenings are coming. Confidence isn’t gone, it’s just waiting for better weather. Keep going. You’re doing brilliantly, even if January disagrees.

Hi! I’m Loretta in VA/USA and glad to be here. I very much resonate with your about page! I’ve been teaching riding for about 20 years, currently have a herd of 10 with 4 being personal horses. Cool thing about 3 of them, they’re a family! 2 full sisters that I did not buy at the same time back in 2010 & 11. Then in 2019 in ended up with the daughter of one of them: all mares. Yay me. No seriously I love mares. I’m excited to be here because I’ve been talking about mindset with people and students for years. I feel like (at least around me) most lesson barns don’t discuss this. I guess they just focus on people trotting and cantering and less on the other stuff that can truly make a difference. Or, the teachers don’t even know. So that whole category has become my soap box. I find that it’s def more difficult for people who are quite accustomed to a negative frame of mind. I try to get people to choose their words carefully, and not begin sentences with I don’t…… as in I don’t think Lily will be good today. We could say I think Lily will be challenging today.
