inspiration/ reference
Where do you find your inspiration? Or references? Do you use photo’s? From websites? Or do you shoot your own? Don’t use references at all? just look outside? Read books? Poetry?

Good question and inspiring to read what others use as references. I’ve used internet references in the past for some practicing sketches and a painting, but used and mixed up multiple to get an original painting, like you did. The past months I’ve used my own photos, so now its mostly my family on my paintings 🤣 I also used a childhood picture of myself and really enjoyed searching through the old photo albums, the nostalgic vibes and snapshots, would recommend it to get inspired! I now have a list of painting ideas I probably have to model for myself 😂 I don’t really want to bother friends or family by asking to model for paintings even though that might turn out very cool. I do dream of setting up complete scènes (create a set with probs and people) and photograph them to turn the picture into a painting 😍 maybe one day!! 💭

@Gina DeMarco that sounds cool! When I see movies I often think to myself, what a wonderful shot, this should be painted! What does getting inspired by music and film look like to you?
Challenge! Show Up & Create
Most artists don’t fail because of talent. They disappear. So let’s fix that. New challenge: Show Up & Create → 3x per week→ for 30 days→ post whatever you made (finished or messy) Rules: - No perfection - No overthinking - Just proof you showed up - Miss a day? Don’t quit. Just continue. This is about becoming someone who creates. Not someone who waits. I’m in too. Who’s joining?

@Phill Hatton this would be a great challenge (for me) 😜 @Valérie Van Kraaij maybe cool to introduce a montly challenge, like this one (2 mins drawing from imagination), focus on the proces and showing up (no matter the “result”) 😁
🌿 Community Spotlight
I want to take a moment to highlight someone who has been consistently shaping the energy of this space in a really meaningful way. @Jenny Warden has been showing up with presence, generosity, and momentum in this community. She’s one of the people who quietly makes things move forward here — through sharing, engaging, and contributing consistently. She’s been one of the top 1% contributors in terms of activity and support, and I really want to acknowledge that properly. So: thank you Janny ❤️ Your presence genuinely matters here. At the same time, I also want to acknowledge everyone who supports this space financially through Ko-fi. Those contributions help keep this group running, ad-free, and open for everyone. It directly sustains the work and energy that goes into maintaining it. Both types of support matter. Different forms, same impact. Going forward, I’ll be introducing a monthly (or more) a Community Spotlight — a simple way to highlight the people who help shape this space through their energy, ideas, and consistency. More of this soon. @Jenny Warden

@Suzy D. Yes Suzy, couldn’t agree more with what Valérie said!! I love you iPad art videos 😍 and your supportiveness (not sure if this is a correct English word but you’ll understand 🤣). I’m here to see more of you! 🥰🥰
Help Each Other by Engaging on Instagram
Hi there! 😊 As an artist with a small Instagram account, I’ve found it really lovely to have a group of supportive and engaging followers. I’ve even noticed that strangers, mostly other artists, sometimes cheer louder than friends and family 🤪 Personally, my goal right now isn’t to grow a huge following (my profile has actually been private for a while), but I do really enjoy meaningful engagement and supporting others as well 😊 That’s why I’d love to invite you to drop your Instagram (name or link) below so we can follow each other, engage, and support one another 😊🙌 Mine is https://www.instagram.com/lizaglorius.art?igsh=MW5qZWk4eG1xNDlxNA%3D%3D&utm_source=qr

Advice on correcting skincolor
Hi there! I’m very happy to be able to ask questions on here (I don’t have a lot of artist friends to turn to 🤣). I hope to get some tips for the following 😊 I started painting about 6 months ago, this being my 3rd or 4th painting with oilpaint. I’m ‘self taught’ so I’m figuring out a bunch of things while practicing, mostly watching tutorials. I struggle with the skintone on my portrait, though the skintone in the reference is warm (tanned skin in summer) I think mine is too warm (the color is slightly brighter and warmer in real life then on the picture I took of the painting). I tried toning it down by glazing some thinned blue/greenish color over it, but it looked muddy and by wiping the glazing it just sort of got stuck in the canvas structure, looking weird. I’ve never really tried glazing so I don’t know what I’m doing tbh 🤣 Also: I used sienna as the color for the underpainting, maybe that was’nt the best choice. I’m wondering if I should wait with correcting the skintone until I finish the bottom of the painting and the hat (its a black and white Checkered hat), because that puts the color into context? If glazing is the best option, please let me know how you would do this (which steps, color) or link tutorials 🫶 Ps: the painting is me as a young child holding up a drawing I made (I have to ad the drawing later 😉) 😊 Thanks in advance!

@Sabine Devlin I find it so remarkable, it sometimes feels as though the path you’re meant for, and what you’re uniquely good at, simply happens to you, as if it’s not a choice but a gift. I would love to be good at éverything 🤣 but I accept there always going to be things I just naturally can’t and things that help me flow and thrive 🪽😊 To be able to capture nature well is so special! Love to see your work.
