My week on the farm
With 5-7 volunteers plus a couple of staff: Picked 5 acres of dock roots in a new rented field, caught a honeybee swarm, planted and tied up 3x40m tunnels, planted two pallets of transplants in the field, tidied the whole workshop ✅ Anything admin related ❌

Beyond the veg box
At 6pm tonight we're going to gather on Skool and chat about how to be more of a food hub, what extras we should stock. We'll also go through the survey results. https://www.skool.com/live/kS6MRBsQPJN Come along

@Katherine Langton that sounds like a really good use of time. And yeah that’s a good strategy re your eggs. That’s what we did with Soul Farm accidentally with eggs but purposefully with tomatoes, we want to hit the ground running so start people up every season with Isle of Wight and then switch them to ours building up 20-30 punnets as soon as they are ready.
@Jessi Stephens The recording is linked above. And I've written out some notes about what we disucussed, hopefully thats useful.
Dual packing lines
Been thinking about the convo last night on separate packing line for extras and the u shaped area. @Laurence Jarrett-Kerr you shared this is how Soul Farm do it... I like that idea but wondered how you handle extras that are already on the mainline for example 1kg of potatoes as an extra where it’s also in the core boxes. Is that pre packed into the U area, or do they go and get it from the main line?
We have the traditional packing line for set boxes and though some advice from someone in lean manufacturing we do the extras as a separate packing area in a U shape. This is so you can stand in one spot and reach everything and work down the manifest list in order. Essentially there are three types of manifest: 1. The set CSA style boxes - these just go down the line and then to the van… easy 2. People with custom boxes - these go straight to the extras packing area obviously 3. Those with both. This tends to go down one line and then the other. Mostly it goes down line 1 then it gets stacked by line 2 waiting for extras to be packed. When the boxes are done then whomever packs ensures the boxes are stacked in numerical order for delivery schedule. The delivery driver always packs the van. What ends up happening is we have a pile of stickers and a pile of manifests. We work through them in order of delivery runs so the van can leave as soon as first one is done. Because line 1 is faster and line 2 slower to set up the person on line 2 when they start will have a pile of boxes ready to go. If they get ahead of line 1 then they might go and hunt in the pile for people with just extras. Hope that makes sense?
@Chris Huskins both lines have potatoes
