Say Their Names
I wrote this based on an exhibit I went to in my hometown Dayton, Ohio. It was a women's exhibit about women who fought for Civil Rights in Dayton. Say their names, say their names, say their names They stood for black power, black pride, black freedom They fought hard for our civil rights. Our claim to freedom Stood up to Jim Crow, stood up for our right to vote Who were they What made them great They were elegant, intelligent Brilliant and bold These are the great women Who were courageous With great strength Charity Edna Adams Nikki Giovanni Toni Morrison Frances Ellen Watkins Fanny Jackson Coppin Charity Adams, WW2 veteran Fought twice in two wars Scoring victories in both Fascism abroad, racism at home Received numerous awards and accolades One of which LT Colonel Led several organizations in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio YWCA, United Negro College Fund, Black Leadership Development Program What more can I say about this powerful woman A brave hero she was Next up Nikki Giovanni A revolutionary A true voice of the people Refused to keep quiet The Black Princess of poetry Used her pen And powerful voice To lead the Black Power Movement A true leader A true artist Grammy nominated Author of Black Feeling, Black Talk She didn't walk but ran to the fight for civil rights A true inspiration indeed Toni Morrison A motivator The curator Of African folklore and symbolism Her bold portrayals of black life Garnered numerous awards Pulitzer prize winner Noble peace prize winner In literature Activist for Muhammad Ali and Angela Davis What more can I say about this brave powerful black woman Her accolades speak for themselves She built a sanctuary That celebrated black men Strengthened black women Opened doors to black writers Paved the way To give them a voice Worked to upend systemic racism That tried to silence them I certainly appreciate her courage and strength Frances Ellen Watkins Born free But instead chose to fight against the evils of slavery Author of Lola Leroy

@Tierrah Nicole Amen! And I'm tired of the forgive and forget narrative. How can you when the cycle continues to be repeated.

She Fed Me Faith Before I Fed Myself Discipline Dayton, Ohio Born and raised Where I spent most of my days Except ain't no manisions here No Uncle Phil or Aunt Viv To help keep me out the streets But I had my mama Me, my brother and all my cousins Spent time outside playing games Like Hide and Go Seek Dodgeball or football Or inside Playing Nintendo and Sega Genesis Piled up on the floor Each of us eagerly waiting For the controller to play Board games like Monopoly, Sorry, Trouble All up on the kitchen table Card games like Tunk Such good times and memories And Lord did we get on her nerves But she loved us all As if we were all her sons As time went on We became teenagers Things started to change In the 90s Gangsta music started to take over And the influence of it Took over my hood Drug dealing became cool Everyone wanted to be one Sadly some of my cousins fell victim to it One cousin Murdered at 20 His shooter only 14 I was 17 A junior in high school When I got the news Two lives lost At such a young age One dead The other in prison Then he later feel victim To being murdered himself And this was the first of many Sadly Mothers burying their sons Well before their time Floor drowned in a sea of their tears But my mama She always told me to keep the faith And never fear Even told me herself If she ever caught me selling dope in the streets She would turn me into the police That was enough For me To feed myself discpline Stayed in school Kept my grades up And here I am Just celebrated my 48th birthday On Feb 25th Grateful and blessed To still be here Have breath to breathe When so many of my peers Are no longer here Gone in their 20s If my mama didn't feed me faith To feed myself discpline Then I may have been in an early grave Or wasting away in the pentiatary I'm so grateful To have such a loving mother Both me and my brother So thank you mama For feeding me faith For birthing me and my brother And the discpline You instilled in us
