✨What to look for in a salon.
One question I get is "Should I rent or find a commission salon?" as a starting question. For those that are getting ready to look for a salon or are questioning their current salon, you want to ask youself these instead: Does the salon energry fit me? What can I contribute to this salon? What education does the salon offer? Is there mentorship? For each of you it will be different. Each of you want different things in a salon space. The salon space can have an amazing sounding commission or rent but can hurt you if you pick the wrong ones. And as we know, the more you move around ... the harder it is to build business. What questions do you have about picking the right salon home?

@Cassidy Scott This is so accurate! I also have mostly always booth rented or had a suite. And I used to love it! But I realize now it’s because I was never in a salon before that fully supported the stylists with growth, or it lacked the environment I wanted to provide for my guests. I am now at a salon that does provide everything I wanted as far as environment, education, team building, opportunity, and just positive energy. I think it’s important to decide if you want to work solo or as a team and even try each one to see what you like better. Each have pros and cons and can be beneficial, but having the right team/environment makes all the difference.
Sunday Shares!
Okay I would LOVE to start a Sunday Shares. Post in the community about your wins! What made you proud this week? Post a photo of your work that you did this week. Tell us a story of something funny that happened! It is still the first mont of the year and it's a great time to start new positive habits! I'll go first- I was able to do a full keratin install for calico hair on a client I never met before her consultation. MANY hours later we gave her her dream hair without having to do too much coloring on her natural.

Looking for Advice!!
Hi everyone!!! I am currently in school in portland at Aveda! I am kind of on the hunt for either a receptionist job in a salon or assisting someone!! I know i am so new and not licensed so i’m not sure how to go about it but I just really want to start learning outside of school boundaries !! Let me know if there’s any advice on where to look!!:))

I want to second April’s answer and say that shadowing can be such a good experience if your school does that, I would ask one of your instructors about it for sure! I also think that working in a beauty supply store is a fantastic idea to get through school too. Not only do you get a ton of education through them and talking to other pros that come in the store, but you get to learn about a lot of different brands, try new products, as well as talk to people in the community who work at salons and ask them questions. Plus, you usually get a pretty great discount 😉 I worked at SalonCentric in a couple of different locations and I always really enjoyed it and learned a lot from other local stylists.
