This thread is for learners participating in the Foundations of ESD Founding Pilot. Thank you for being part of the first public version of the course. As you move through the pilot, I’d genuinely like to know what is working, what is unclear, and what would make the course more useful. You do not need to write a formal review or respond to every prompt. A sentence or two about something you noticed is plenty. Some particularly helpful things to share: - Clear: What made sense immediately? - Confusing: Where did you hesitate, reread, or feel unsure what I meant? - Useful: What explanation, example, activity, or resource helped most? - Missing: What would have helped you understand or apply an idea? - Too much: Was anything repetitive, overly detailed, or harder than it needed to be? - Technical: Did you find a broken link, formatting problem, unclear download, or other issue? When possible, begin your comment with the module or lesson you were working on. For example: Module 1 — What Is ESD? The heat example made the distinction much more concrete, but I would have liked an example like that earlier. Or even: Module 1.3 — I had to reread the explanation of ___ before it clicked. Hi everyone — I know some of you have been patiently waiting while I continue building out the Foundations of ESD course and the larger Teaching for a Complex World project. I’m working on quite a few things behind the scenes, but I didn’t want all of that work to stay behind the scenes until the course is finished. So, I wanted to put something useful in your hands now. I’ve attached a new resource I made called Essential Distinctions: 14 Practical Cards for Clearer Thinking. The idea behind it is pretty simple: a lot of important ideas become harder to work with when we blur together things that are related, but not quite the same. The pack explores distinctions such as sustainability and flourishing, awareness and capability, content and competency, participation and compliance, alignment and evidence, and several others. The goal isn’t to memorize definitions. It’s to give you better questions for looking at a lesson, project, workplace situation, or even an everyday decision. And you definitely do not need to read all 32 pages at once. In fact, I’d recommend the opposite. Pick something you’re currently working on or thinking about. Choose one distinction that seems relevant. Spend two to five minutes with the prompt on the first page, then use the worked example, applications, and cautions on the following page if they’re helpful. The resource was designed to work that way: one question, one situation, one small shift in how you see it. It’s also completely standalone — you don’t need to have taken the course, know anything about ESD beforehand, or have any other Teaching for a Complex World materials. This is just one of the resources I’m developing, but I wanted my lovely community members to have something concrete to explore while I keep working on the course. Please take a look, try a card or two, and see what you think. And if one of the distinctions makes you notice something differently, raises a question, or turns out to be especially useful, I’d genuinely love to hear about it in the comments.

First of all, thank you for visiting Teaching for a Complex World! I'm beginning to explore what this space could become. Much of my work focuses on a question I've been thinking about for years: How can we help educators make sense of a complex, interconnected world and translate that understanding into useful, realistic teaching without simply adding more to their plates? I'll be using this space to experiment with practical resources, short learning experiences, conversations, and tools around systems thinking, sustainability, curriculum, teacher capacity, and education more broadly. Since I'm building this by learning from actual people rather than trying to design everything in advance, I'm curious: If you're an educator, what is one problem, question, or challenge you wish you had better tools for right now?
