HOTFF (Hearts of Texas Fiber Farm) update Feb 2026
Hey guys, I’ve been wondering how you are doing. We survived the 11 days of freeze and the almost 15 inches of snow without any major problems. Nothing died and all are alive and thriving. I have ewes due starting in about 6-8 weeks and have been putting together my lambing supplies. If I have a bottle baby I have friend who will take it but for the future I am interested in buying bottle lambs to raise to slaughter and breeding Shetlands less. I am starting to consider adding a milk ewe… I would like to collect some Navajo Churro and Leicester Longwool for my fiber herd. Any thoughts? I don’t enjoy rams so far. I don’t think I would want anymore rams unless I kept one for the milk ewe, maybe a terminal sire to give lambs for the freezer.

@Marianne Marti how did it turn out with the ultrasounds? It’s exciting to hear about your flock! What is your feeding regimen right now? My current sheep are easy keepers but I am now planning for a Finn ewe lamb sometime this summer or fall. From what I understand they are fairly easy and very fertile but they eat a lot, not like my Shetlands which can live on weeds and air if they must. Feeding dairy ewes seems a little daunting.

@Marianne Marti that’s wonderful to hear that at least two ewes took. Thank you for sharing the feeding information. I will give CDT this weekend as I have one ewe that should be due in about a month. The other two have about 2 months. How exciting about going to the shearing class! I look forward to hearing about what you learn. The farm vet came out today to look over my animals and answer questions. My sheep have actually been getting hot with the warmer temps and it is recommended that I shear them before they deliver. We also talked about a multitude of things but especially my lambing set up. So I will work on putting together jugs for individual ewes and their babies. I have a hair sheep ram lamb I acquired recently, a bottle baby. I saw how negatively the ewes reacted to him and realized that I prefer that ewes each have their own space for bonding for a few days rather than all being together. The bottle baby experience has been a good one overall. It helps that I got a healthy lamb, the ram from a set of triplets. He had already been supplemented, too, so he was never sick or struggling. I am looking into switching to a local feed as we have one available that is reported to be pretty good. It is called Stampede. The vet (who raises Southdowns) helped design the feed actually. Right now I have been giving the Tractor Supply stuff but I am not sure I want to use it long term. So much stuff going on! Very good to hear from you. I enjoy hearing about your flock Have a great evening!
Thank you, Ed
@Edward Crowley thank you for the invite! This looks like a great way to stay connected and learn!
