The media over here is in hysterics, crowing about the winter storm in the NE U.S. Yes, travel has become a mess, but the news reports are treating this as Armageddon, or something close to it. This storm is not unprecedented. A storm like this happens every once in a while, the most recent in 2018. Other notable winter storms occurred in 2016, 1996, 1993, 1962 and a massive storm in 1888. Each of these storms brought snow totals of up to three feet or more, with drifts much higher. I just get irritated when I hear breathless reporting concerning big winter storms. It's happened before and will happen again. Now, if this was happening in May, I would likely be concerned. A big snowstorm in February, not so much.
Natural Disasters: Tornadoes 🌪️
🌪️ What Damage Can Tornadoes Cause? 1. Structural Damage to Buildings Homes can be severely damaged or completely destroyed. Roofs can be ripped off; walls can collapse. Mobile homes, sheds, and garages are especially vulnerable. 2. Flying Debris Tornado winds turn everyday objects into dangerous projectiles. Debris can break windows, puncture walls, and injure people. 3. Vehicles Thrown or Flipped Cars, trucks, and even buses can be tossed like toys. This can cause both property damage and serious injuries. 4. Uprooted or Snapped Trees Large trees can be pulled from the ground or broken in half. Falling trees damage houses, power lines, and roads. 5. Power Outages Tornadoes commonly knock down power poles and transformers. Communities may lose electricity for hours or days. 6. Infrastructure Damage Roads blocked or destroyed. Water lines, gas lines, and communication networks can be damaged. 7. Agricultural Loss Farmland can be flattened. Livestock can be injured or lost. Crops can be destroyed in minutes. 8. Environmental Damage Tornadoes can scatter chemicals, pollutants, and debris across large areas. They can cause fires if they hit gas lines or electrical systems. 9. Injuries and Fatalities Sadly, tornadoes can cause loss of life due to collapsing buildings or flying debris.

Here in the Midwest region of the United States, tornadoes can be quite numerous, especially in the springtime. I have never personally witnessed a tornado, but I covered many when I was a television meteorologist. In addition to the damages a tornado can do listed above, I must add psychological damage. My experience with the public has been that people who survive a tornado are often terrified of future storms, even when no tornado is present. That's a damage that often doesn't go away.
Major Winter Storm
Here in Indiana, in the U.S., we're preparing for a snowfall of 8-13 inches or more. This storm has prompted winter storm warnings from Arizona to New England. Ice will be possible, mainly south of the Ohio River. This is the biggest winter storm in many years.

A beautiful, but cold week here in Indiana, USA. 8-10 inches of snow on the ground. It's a powdery snow and the local kids have been out of school all week, due to the cold and the ice that has formed on the roads. Of course, the kids have enjoyed sledding and other winter activities. A slight warm-up, then another chance of snow and lower temps on Tuesday. We haven't had a winter like this in more than 20 years.
