I read about this recently and wanted to share it with all of you. John Lethbridge developed the Lethbridge diving dress to replace the diving bell. This allowed the diver to be submerged max depth of 12 fathoms at 34 minutes. The same issue with the diving bell remained though, there was not a lot of freedom of movement.
