Being selective with time
Considering that different actions lead to either benefit or destruction, one should be highly selective in endeavors & especially commitments they choose to be involved in. Also being selective about what food enters the body. But not suffering when this can't be controlled as these decisions are not made for the purpose of pleasure.

Pain & Reaction
First arises the feeling, second the reaction. Both liking and disliking reactions lead to forms of suffering in all cases. For example: when there is no disliking reaction to pain, there is no suffering. A mindful reaction will replace any other present reaction.

So instead of reacting to the feeling, you simply ARE the feeling. Strangely enough, even if you react to it, you would also BE the reaction under mindfulness.
Two purposes of mindfulness meditation
1 - Realizing the sickness is there (difficult for a fish to see water) 2 - Healing the sickness (seeing clearly what mindstate & action gives what result)

Cool synchronicity happened while typing a reply to this. Anyway, yeah it seems like there’s two parts to growing. Seeing the goal and then going through the process of slowly restructuring yourself in alignment with that goal in the present moment repeatedly as things come at you. Mindfulness allows you to see your predicament (realizing sickness) and then also catch reactions of mind early enough to prevent them from continuing (healing process that takes time).
