A Word About Fair Housing Compliance
A quick but important reminder for every agent implementing the Motivated Mover Method: Fair Housing compliance is not optional. The rule is simple: you cannot make, print, publish, or cause to be made any notice, statement, or advertisement about housing that indicates a preference, limitation, or discrimination based on a protected class, including race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, or familial status. That matters when we talk about life transitions. Yes, life events often create real estate needs. A change in space, timing, budget, ownership, location, or lifestyle may lead someone toward a move. But our job is to market to the housing need, not to call out or target people based on who they are. Do not create marketing that suggests you prefer, exclude, or are specifically seeking people because of family status, pregnancy, age, disability, marital status, religion, national origin, or any other protected or locally protected category. The safer standard is this: Market to the transition, not the protected characteristic. Speak to the problem, not the person’s identity. Let the consumer self-identify. Use objective, inclusive language. When in doubt, ask your broker or legal counsel before publishing. The Motivated Mover Method is about showing up with relevance, service, and professionalism. It is not permission to target, steer, exclude, or make assumptions. Serve people well. Stay compliant. Protect your license, your clients, and the integrity of the work.
