8 things I'll state about me (still trying to answer a couple)
Name: I'm Dawn Fry, I was christened Dawn Sadie Huggins, and my Dad said he wanted to call me Dawn Sadie Innocence Huggins (so my initials spelt 'DISH' - he always said it was a good job he didn't - as in I wasn't pretty enough - defo my Dad's style of joke, a bit harsh). Where am I from: I grew up in rural Essex, UK in a little village called Woodham Mortimer - I called it Rigor Mortis! Why do I want to write? I feel like something is inside wanting to get out. Did you see Small Prophets (BBC)? How amazing would it be if you could make someone feel an iota of what that evokes...... What's my fav story? As a kid, I loved The Wind in the Willows - we had a great teacher that really made it come alive, reading to us each day. I also love the film Moonstruck - I love the family dynamics, how the mum is searching for the meaning of why men cheat on women (they fear death) and some of the minor characters are fab, and make the film for me. What's my fav fictional character? (Will come back later on this - I need to sleep on it) What's my fav writer? Sally Wainwright did an amazing job with Riot Women, as I'm of that age, it really spoke to me. A book that has stayed with me forever was Perfume by Patrick Suskind - how someone could write so evocatively about smell was completely genius (the film was shit). What world/universe do you wish you'd come up with? I don't know - this makes my mind go blank. Change ending of an existing story and why? (More time needed for this answer too) What would the story of your life be called? Being Seen Where do you hope to get to with my writing? Just doing it would be a fab start.....having fun, getting the creative juices flowing - not thought beyond that. I used to have a dream to be invited as a guest onto Women's Hour - how amazing if that was connected to my writing (sadly the programme isn't a patch on what it used to be so maybe I need a new dream).
Perfume!!! Totally forgot about this book. An incredible story.
✍️✍️✍️ START HERE>>> Welcome! (And a question for you...)
Hey! I'm so pleased you're here. I'm on a mission to create a community of aspiring writers, writers for fun, and award-winners-to-be, where we can all share our ideas, work and inspiration, and I can share my knowledge and passion for creating worlds, people and work that moves people - to laughter, tears, action, and everything in between. If you haven't already, please take a moment to introduce yourself (using our 10 interview questions, if you like) in a new post (Community tab>>Write Something) And then, what better time to start writing than right now, with the free Scene One 7-day 'get writing' challenge. But first, a quick question What are you hoping to see and do and learn here? (There are no wrong answers to this!) Please do reach out and say hello. Happy Writing! Mark :-)
@Mark O Sullivan Yes I bet, it's very vulnerable. On a smaller level I found that with my comedy show, some days it was more exhausting to share the story.
@Dawn Fry it's brilliant isn't it. The characters are so good. Lovely to meet you
Hello 👋 Introduction Interview
I am using some of the interview questions to introduce myself. Here goes: I'm Kayleigh, born and raised in Leamington Spa (the dodgy side). My writing usually leans into comedy. I write and perform stand-up comedy and took my first show to Edinburgh last year. My comedy is narrative and is always rooted in direct experiences and a lot of inspiration for my writing usually comes from feeling passionately angry about something. Writing about it and turning it into comedy is my way through it. I want to write because I feel like my background and experiences are something I don't see represented on TV or across the arts very often and an ambition of mine is to get one of my scripts commissioned to help others from a similar background feel seen. I struggle with answering questions about favourites of anything as it depends on my mood at the time haha, but a story I loved reading is The Book Thief, also Sorrow and Bliss. Movie wise, JoJo Rabbit. Such a beautiful funny, dark, and powerful film. It had everything and still makes me weep thinking of it. A favourite character, again, too hard to answer but a character I love is Alma in Alma's not normal. She is based on Sophie Wilan but maybe that's why she's so great. Favourite writer? Loved Caroline Aherne, comedy with heart. And more recently, Kat Sadler, writer of Such Brave Girls. A world I wish I came up with? I'm not much of a fantasy writer, so sometimes I wish I had the imagination to come up with something magical, but in terms of writing, when I watch something like Such Brave Girls I think, man I wish I wrote that! Where do you hope to get to with your writing? I have got my writing on stage in terms of my comedy show, but I would love to have a play staged and a comedy drama series commissioned for TV. That is the dream. I'm looking forward to this and getting to know everyone. Thanks for setting it up Mark 🍋
