Addresses the "social by design" part of our life while countering isolation stereotypes. Living alone isn't a pity party for one, it's a way of making life your beyotch! 🤭

@Baz Morris Your sister and mom have the same age gap that I have with my mom. My mom is 75 and started to decline after breaking her shoulder last year, and her refusal to wear her hearing aids is making her increasingly isolated. I was originally planning to live in Colorado with her Sept-Dec, and then in Georgia the rest of the year, but my sisters who live a 2hr drive from us don't visit as much as I hoped they would...mostly because of their kids' commitments for sports and birthday parties. So I'm declaring Gladys to be a service dog (she has truly fixed my sleep paralysis, which was worse than I realized) because I resent airlines charging $150 each way to put a dog in the same space I already paid for. That way she can just come along whenever I want to head to Colorado and check in on my mom...clean the house, keep her company, check on her cognition and mobility, take her out for lunch, drive to Aspen to visit the little ones and watch them play hockey, soccer, gymnastics, etc. My plan is to never put her in a nursing home or facility of any kind - I want to do what you and your sister have done for your parents. I know a lot of that will depend on any conditions or illnesses she develops though.

WELCOME! Hi, I'm Baz, and I'm your community host. Please take the time to introduce yourself to the community! I'll start, and you can use my format or one of your own. ======================= My name is Barry Baz Morris. Baz is a nickname I picked up over 50 years ago in the UK, when I was a wee lad of 18 living near the Scottish border in the Northern English town of Hexham-upon-Tyne. I've been writing since the 4th grade (age 9). However, I worked in medicine, higher education, and the architecture/engineering/construction industry as a proposal writer and manager until I semi-retired in 2024. In this community, I share what I know and love about living alone; I’ve found that it doesn’t have to be a pity party for one, and that there is, indeed, and art to getting comfortable with and thriving living solo in a coupled world. 📬 My newsletter site is: https://barrybazmorris.com. 🧵 I'm on Threads, too: https://www.threads.com/@barrybazmorris ======================== OK, your turn!

Hi everyone, I'm Katie and I've been something of a loner all my life, totally single for 25 years. Being a combination of unconventional and financially responsible has always put me at odds with the dating world. I was married for a few years in the 90s in another country, and we actually met up for lunch last month. I got a couple of great things from that marriage: 1) UK dual citizenship and 2) Bragging rights for beating both George Clooney and Jeff Bezos to a Venice wedding by DECADES. I currently live in two places: a new co-housing community in middle Georgia for (we have our own houses, just in the same small neighborhood), and with my 75yo mother in western Colorado. I have a bossy little 13yo dog who helps a lot with the need for affection. And it turns out she travels pretty well on planes in her backpack carrier! My main hobbies and interests these days are: unusual travel, demolition gardening (aka using loppers, pole saws, etc), cooking for rescue dogs, strategizing around my "late-onset" ADHD, and creating a local 'freeconomy' network to counteract late stage capitalism. I'm also doing a health/fitness challenge for 2 months, starting Oct 1. Substack newsletter: https://passportsonfire.substack.com (Personal finance + travel + lifestyle design for 5-figure earners)
Game Night, Book Club, etc.
Community is important. We all have different levels of need when it comes to social interaction. For example, just hearing about my friends social calendar can totally stress me out. Sometimes I wonder how can she possibly attend all of those events and still remain sane? What is your preference for including some form of community in your solo living plan? - Game night? - Book club? - Coffee meetups?

When I'm at my Georgia home, it's pretty ideal. Most of us are naturally solos, even one of the married folks. We just have lots of options and opportunities and take part in the things that push our buttons - potluck on Together Tuesdays is the only one we are heavily encouraged to attend. Every day there's an early morning walk (so early she's usually on her own) and a late evening walk. Then there's everything else under the sun: the gym, a warehouse store trip, jigsaw puzzles, a 10K race, board game night, or my personal favorite - pub trivia! In Colorado, I put together a separate Google calendar of local events I'm interested in, and then I attend if I feel so inclined. Yesterday I spent 2 hours helping to harvest seeds at the county library's Discovery Garden with about half a dozen others. Tomorrow I'm attending a seminar on what we can learn from other democracies. I go alone to everything and if I'm feeling sociable, I engage with others.
Recipe for Intant Pot Chicken Taco Stew
=============================== I had some ingredients and asked ChatGPT to give me a recipe for the Instant Pot using them all. ============================================================================== Ingredients I have on hand: ------------------------------------------- 1. Chicken breasts (5 boneless/skinless) 2. Golden potatoes 3. Bell peppers (orange) 4. Taco seasoning packet 5. Canned diced tomatoes 6. Black beans (canned) 🌮 Instant Pot Chicken Taco Stew =========================== Servings: 6 Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 10 minutes (plus ~10 for pressure build/release) Total Time: ~30 minutes Ingredients - 5 boneless, skinless chicken breasts - 4–5 golden potatoes, diced into 1-inch cubes - 2 orange bell peppers, sliced - 1 (14–15 oz) can diced tomatoes (with juices) - 1 packet taco seasoning (or 3 tbsp homemade mix) - 1 cup chicken broth (or water + bouillon) Optional toppings/add-ins: - 1 cup frozen corn or 1 can black beans (drained) - Shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese - Sour cream or Greek yogurt - Fresh cilantro or green onions - Tortilla chips or warm tortillas for serving Instructions 1. Layer the pot: potatoes on the bottom, chicken, peppers, diced tomatoes, with juice, frozen corn, taco seasoning, water/broth 2. Cook: 3. Shred & stir: 4. Serve: Variation: Creamy Taco Stew After shredding the chicken, stir in ½ cup cream cheese OR ½ cup sour cream/cream until melted and creamy. This thickens the stew into a rich, Tex-Mex style filling for rice bowls or burritos. 🔥 Tip: Leftovers freeze well — shred chicken fully, cool, and store in freezer bags for up to 3 months. ============= I'll let you know how it turned out!

A fellow solo, who's vegetarian, has been doing the same thing and also approves of the results. She only needed to tweak spice levels to her taste (she's originally Sri Lankan).
TWO FREE COURSES
In the Classroom, I've created two free courses for you to peruse. The first is 'THE ART OF LIVING SOLO,' which is a Q&A with me so that you can learn more about my living solo history and current soloist journey. The second free course is 'LIVING UN-COUPLED - Why We Choose To Live Solo.' This course explores different motivations for choosing a solo life (even if you're in a committed LTR).

Cool, thanks! I've heard of "solo in a relationship", but never experienced it first-hand.
