Facilitation for kids (9-11 yrs old)
The school of my kids offers the opportunity to organise workshops for the kids and I would like to participate in this. I'm thinking of subjects and exercises that are suitable for kids in the age of 9-11 years old. One of my ideas is to organise a light version of the design sprint or where they can think of a new toy or game, but maybe this is too conceptual. Has any one experience with this?

Maybe look at getting ready for their next school, the older ones will be moving on soon so might be interesting to do a bit of a confidence booster type workshop. This could include inviting some older ones to contribute to the workshop about what they wish they knew. There's a famous UK footballer (you might never have heard of him), Marcus Rashford, who as written books for young people about the skills and knowledge to thrive (You can do it & You are a champion). I would structure it around current strengths etc. Work backwards from I want them to feel more confident when they walk out the door! Let them lead at their pace and make very interactive. Sounds like an interesting challenge.

Wow Catarina that sounds amazing, what has your response been?
Can we become facilitators of our own team meetings?
Hello! A while ago, after another 90 minutes spent sitting in a meeting staring at an excel spreadsheet on a big screen, about a project that we have been discussing for almost 2 years with ZERO progress, I came home feeling a sense of dread and anxiety at the prospect of this being my Every Tuesday for the next years. Never the need for facilitation has been more obvious! I think that's when I realised I wanted to invest in becoming a facilitator. I am building my business, but I would love to be able to do something in my current role to help my own team before I leave. I tried to mention this to my line manager, volunteering to arrange a few sessions to kick start this project. To the surprise of no one - or we would not be here - they are incredibly reluctant to relinquish the obsessive control over their meetings. I think there is also an element of tension here as I would have to call myself out of the decision process and let the rest of the team decide. I would frankly happily give away my ideas on the project if we could progress with someone else's ideas. Anyone has successfully navigated this situation? Any tips to persuade people of the importance of facilitation or should I spend my energies on the already converted?

HI Anna, maybe volunteer to deliver to other teams as a small pilot, people generally get motivated if they think they are missing out; once you have delivered successfully you can offer to share with your manager. Often the perceived value comes from others acceptance. I have pushed design thinking exercises in the team meetings (sometimes to an unwilling audience) and just stood up and delivered a small exercise that achieved results, so everyone asked for more. Or you could request the opportunity to deliver a small exercise as part of your career development portfolio rather than as an improvement to team meetings. Potentially you could involve your manager in designing the exercise maybe start off with a generic question, "Identify 3 ways we could improve the customer experience" on a working alone together method. If people work with this you can try another exercise the following week and without anyone noticing you can change the culture of team meetings. Lastly and please feel free to ignore but there are t shirts that say "Urgh, I have just attended another team meeting, when an e mail would have worked" Good luck Julie
5 dysfunctions of a team
Hi All. I’ll be doing a series of team building workshops based on the 5 dysfunctions of a team model. It’s with an intact team of 12. I’d love ideas and exercises you’ve used to introduce the model that have worked well. This is intended to be a series of 7, 90 minute sessions. I’m kicking off this week! Thank you!

Can you include during the exercise a task where you identify what actions would have changed the situation and improved it. You can choose between immediate or future improvements. I try to avoid going down rabbit warrens of what went wrong as you can end up stuck down there with people reliving poor experiences.
Looking for Icebreaker ideas
Hi All, in my new role I will be conducting workshops for older people, high profile business people. Any ideas for icebreakers🤔? It could be a book or some links I could learn from. Thanks

These have worked for me as individuals can share how much they wish to disclose about themselves at an early point. They have all added to the day by bringing people together, it starts as a really interesting shared experience. You have come into a large sum of money what is the first thing you would buy? A book you think everyone should read? If you could invite anyone to dinner (including fictional and deceased), who would you invite and why (no family or friends). Nelson Mandela is the top answer for this. A holiday destination you would tell people to avoid? A film you have watched more than 10 times? What you would tell your 15 year old self? An expression you overuse? Good Luck Julie

I just participated in a demo of this relatively new tool for online meetings. It is especially designed for Workshop facilitation and has several tools integrated. You can - for example - prepare your entire workshop within butter, including the preparation of breakout rooms and assign tasks to every room. They have templates like "AJ&Smart's favorite icebreakers" and many more... Check it out: https://www.butter.us

I really liked this platform, thought they were really on to something here away from the normal boring team meetings on zoom.
