🌲 The Scouter’s Code: Respecting the Giants
As we head out for our April 1st hike, we need to talk about the "Senior Expert" standard for the Redwoods. These trees aren't just scenery; they are protected monuments and sacred ground. The Rule: In our local National and State Parks, it is illegal to harvest, peel, or remove anything—even downed bark. Our Approach: We are here to Scout, not Strip. • Identify & Document: We use our eyes and cameras to build our GPS database. • Leave No Trace: We don't touch the bark or foliage. We leave the forest exactly how we found it. • Stay Legal: My survival demonstrations are for educational knowledge. Never practice "extraction" in protected zones. We protect the Redwoods so they can protect the Klamath basin. Know the law, respect the trees, and stay out of the Ranger’s office. HONORING THE ANCESTRAL LANDS & (TEK) Redwoods Fern and Fire operates within the ancestral territories of the Yurok, Karuk, Tolowa Dee-ni', Hoopa (Hupa), and Wiyot peoples. We acknowledge that these tribes are the original and ongoing stewards of the Redwoods and the Klamath River. Our Policy on TEK: Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) is the intellectual and spiritual property of these Indigenous nations. • Zero-Share Policy: We will not share, broadcast, or "map" any TEK-specific harvesting sites, sacred locations, or traditional medicinal practices (other than those already documented to the public) out of absolute respect for Tribal sovereignty and privacy. • Stewardship Only: Our community focuses on modern recreational scouting and "Leave No Trace" principles. We do not teach or claim authority over Indigenous traditions.
🚨 START HERE: Safety, Rules, & Our Family Mission
"Welcome to Redwoods Fern and Fire. We are a local Klamath family trading our screens for the forest floor, and we’re glad you’re here. To keep this community safe and high-quality, please read and respect these 5 core rules: 1. 100% ID or No Eat: Never post 'Can I eat this?' photos. We do not provide edibility checks. Safety is 100% your responsibility. 2. Leave No Trace (LNT): We respect Yurok, Karuk, and Tolowa lands. Dismantle practice shelters, extinguish fires, and pack out all trash. 3. Legal Compliance Only: We follow all California and Tribal laws. No posts about illegal harvesting or trespassing. 4. Family-Friendly Only: Keep language clean. This is a space for parents and kids to learn together. 5. No Expert Posturing: Frame advice as 'what works for me.' We are all students of the Redwoods here. By staying in this group, you agree to these standards. Let’s get out there!"
