Did you listen to Carey's Conversation with John Mark Comer?
The “smaller” version may not be for everyone, but what are your thoughts? "I am more and more convinced that the future of the church is smaller. It's around tables, not stages. It's relational. It's formational. It's prayer-based. https://www.instagram.com/p/C2cpKCBLB2j/?img_index=2

I haven’t been able to catch the whole interview yet, but it’s on my list! JMC obviously isn’t the first to point this out, but he’s certainly brining it to the forefront for many people in recent years. It’s hard to argue against the components he’s suggesting- tables, formation, relationships and prayer. Those are core markers of the Church throughout history. The question of “bigness” is one I’ve wrestled with a lot in this recent season of transition for our family. Anytime it comes up I’m reminded of a quote from Simon Sinek where he says “scale creates distance” and while he’s talking about that in the context of the marketplace- I’d argue it’s no less true within the Church. And, if it’s true then, size in a church inherently creates space between the people of that church. Space between people makes things like a table, life on life formation, relationships and prayer (together), much more difficult. Not impossible, but much more difficult. All that to say, if those elements are going to be core to the future of the Church as they have been to the history of it, then I’d say I’m with JMC and others who say the future of the local church is “smaller”. I think there’s follow-up to this though as small may not mean the total demise of the mega-church, but it does mean a necessary change in the function, organization and priorities of the mega-church, in my opinion.
