@Izzy Karr Yes, i think you'll find Music of India offers a way of improvisation similar to jazz but modal oriented and the rhythms are fantastic and great to incorporate into any instrument

This music was spontaneously improvised on the island of Naitauba ( 1 of 300 islands in Fiji), a spiritual Sanctuary island. just to get there is a 11 hour plane from LAX to Fiji then an inter-island small propeller plane for 1.5 hours, then a 5 hour boat ride !!
