I need your help with implementing term limits
We have been discussing term limits on our board and are considering 3 3-year terms. I am curious what term limits others have put in place. Also, we currently have a couple of board members with a longer tenure and I wonder how we might approach the issue with those people without being disrespectful?

I may be an outlier, but I don't favor term limits. They are inherently arbitrary and can often cut off important institutional knowledge and expertise. Also, I am aware of a number of boards that ostensibly have term limits, but then work around them, particularly by having an exception for board officers and then appointing directors whom they want to keep on to indefinite officer positions. At that point, why have the limits? The downside of no term limits, of course, is the risk of having "deadwood" board members; with term limits, you can allow them to gracefully slip off. While it may mean a difficult discussion to ask a director not to renew his/her term, I think it is a very reasonable price to pay to ensure you can keep the people you want on your board and remove the people you don't want off the board.
