God or Gods?
Does anyone know how to read the plural of "Gods" Steiner often uses in his lectures? Does he mean higher spiritual beings or does he literally mean "Gods", which sounds polytheistic? How does that interface with the monotheism of Christianity (One God), "the Father", Christ united with the Father, etc?

When he says "die Götter", he means the Gods in the sense of the creator spirits. When he refers to the Father or the trinity, he says "die Gottheit" or the Godhead. The beings of the hierarchies from Exousia to Seraphim can be seen as gods or of the gods, they are beings who create the universe continuously, receiving the impulse from the father. We have been taught in social studies classes (humanities) that modern, civilized religions are "monotheistic", but this is misleading, and I would say an attempt to simplify our understanding of the world down to where it fits the confines of the intellect. The polytheistic religions of olden times had multiple divinities who were relatively equal; but in many cases such as ancient Greece these gods - Zeus, Apollo, Ares etc were actually the Archangels Zachariel, Michael and Samael. Through our anthroposophical understanding of Christianity, we learn to perceive the spiritual word as a perfectly ordered, creative and self-sacrificial divine network where creation proceeds from the father ground of the world, outward through all the hierarchies and ultimately to the human being. So called monotheistic religions are generally pre-Christian or Old Testament religions where one all powerful god and judge is the arbiter of all existence.
