🎸 How to Make Autumn Leaves Sound More Like Music
🎸 Make Autumn Leaves Actually Sound Like Jazz — Not an Etude A common mistake: you’re playing all the “right” notes… but it still sounds stiff. Here’s a 3-level approach to fix that, using real chord formations. 🔹 Level 1 – Gm Only (Feel First) Play the whole form using just Gm formations only (as in the course) 👉 This trains phrasing, pocket, and melodic intent—without overthinking. Example: Over Cm7 Still play Gm (treat it like you're soloing in one mode). 🔹 Level 2 – Split the tune in half: - Over Cm7 and F7, play Cm shapes (C-Eb-G) - Over Bbmaj7 and Ebmaj7, switch to Gm shapes, then return to Cm shapes over the ii–V (Am7b5–D7), and finish on Gm. Now you're not just playing notes—you’re telling a harmonic story. 🔹 Level 3 – Connect Phrases Across the Switch. Don’t just “start fresh” on every chord. Instead: - End your phrase on a chord tone in the next chord - PRO TIP: Comp the tune so much you get bored at it (it will help you improvise) 🎯 This is the exact process I use when demoing Autumn Leaves in lessons and gigs. 🎁 Want a Discount to GuitArmin Premium? A short lesson not to be taken lightly, as it can lead to the development of many lines. Thanks Armin 🙂
Line Studies
Hey Armin, Great to be in the group! Any thoughts on the line studies in Linear Impressions? Maybe how to blend them in with the basic activities?

Hi Chris, welcome to this group 🙂Do you mean linear expressions ?

@Armin Mir Yes I can 🙂 @Chris Bandini My advice would be to learn the formations, at least formations 2 and 3 in Gm. Then apply them in the context of a tune as Armin said. Watch his video bellow and you'll hear how he put formations 2 and 3 over Like Someone in Love. Try to steal his lines and then analyse them. The notes that are not contained in the formations are essentially chord tones (i.e. B note over G7 which is the third of this chord). Hope this helps 😊

For people like me who have not suscribed to Spotify I just found the whole album on YouTube. A fantastic bebop player with many inventive ideas. Thank you Armin for reminding me of this jazz giant. I also loved his son Doug, whom I listened to twice in concert.

@David Williams Absolutely! My favorite of his all time recordings 👍
Chord Tone Mapping
Hey guys thought I would share this as this is helping me find/hear the chord tones when working with the 4 formation. Green indicates the root note while the orange are the chordal tones.

It's great that you've done this work Scott. However, let me give you my opinion, which is that it would be more interesting in the mid-to-long term to visualize a Major7 (or 6) chord in each of the formations, then to visualize the third, fifth, major seventh, 9th, 11th# and 13th of this chord, each of these degrees representing an interesting color to target (or to land on). Of course, take your time. Start, for example, by visualizing only the third in each position and in different octaves. Then use the formation and land on the third over a ii-V-I backing track then in the context of a tune . When you feel comfortable, add another degree.
