I’ve been doing my lifting right after I get done running. I’m not sure what the correct pattern is on this, but I feel like it’s working for me.
Running economy: Why “stronger” can mean “faster at the same effort.”
Strength has a definite impact on how we run. Better running economy not only helps us run faster, but can also decrease our chance of injury through better movement patterns. - Strength can reduce wasted motion. - Triathlon link: better run off the bike for the same HR/pace. Below is a study that discusses the effects of strength training on middle & long distance runner's economy. An excerpt from this article mentions: "The combination of two or more strength training methods (e.g., high load training, plyometric training) may induce greater running economy improvement, compared to isolated training methods." Study: systematic review/meta-analysis on strength training & running economy. Note: all articles and studies are up for interpretation, and there are usually other studies that refute ones that you've read. It's important that you use your best judgement when deciding what you believe to be the truth. As a coach, I use studies to help me validate what I've seen and experienced in my career.

This is a great topic. I’m curious what your thoughts are on “too much” strength/muscle. I feel like there is happy medium somewhere in the equation. For example Truett Hanes is trying to go for a sub 2:16 marathon for the Olympic trials. He’s dialing back his muscle mass extensively to be able to run quicker. The heavier you are, the more energy it takes. I’m just curious what your thoughts are on this.

@Jeff Boyer I 100% agree with you that health is the number one priority for an athlete. And I appreciate your perspective. Putting it in terms of power to weight ratio I think is a more logical approach. Top running backs in the NFL are prime examples of the power to weight ratio. I appreciate your input on this.
Exercises we love to hate.
Post the exercise you hate but know you need. I'll start. Squats. I'm pretty sure everyone hates squats.

Dumbbell lunges…. Both forward and lateral.
Biggest Limiter
Right now, what feels like the biggest limiter in your training; fitness(endurance), strength, time, recovery, or maybe it's something else entirely? Why?

@Jeff Boyer primarily a strength plan to fit my triathlon training. I’ve been getting my miles in, but the strength side is where I struggle.

@Jeff Boyer not as much the time constraint as it is knowing what and how to do it. I did high school and college sports with strength programs involved and we always had a sheet to go off of. It would have the different lifts for the days, the reps for the days, and suggested weight based off your max lifts. Now I don’t have anything like that or really a solid game plan to attack when I do hit the weights.
Weekly Strength training
Team, how often are you currently strength training? When do you feel it helps you the most, off-season, early build, in season maintenance, or do you feel it helps at all? Drop your answer + why you think so. There's no wrong answers...

I may have the only wrong answer here, but I primarily lift when I start to feel an injury coming on. I know it’s not a good thought process, but I tend to focus more on my running than on my strength. Once I feel like something is off, I’ve found that strength training tends to alleviate the on coming problem. Here lately I’ve tried more to be proactive and sprinkle in 1-2 strength sessions a week to keep up with things.

@Jeff Boyer I appreciate the response. I actually have more of a strength background than running background. I think that’s why I’ve primarily focused on the running is because I know I need to improve it. I have since realized that strength plays more into it than people think.
