Who's here? Drop your intro.
Tell us three things: 1. What you do (job, industry, student, career-changer, whatever) 2. What brought you to Clief Notes 3. One thing you're trying to figure out right now related to computing or AI I'll respond to every single one. And read each other's intros too because the person who's stuck on the same problem as you might already be in this thread. I'll go first I am Jake, I have been working in tech for 15 Years, building with Generative AI for 3 Years straight now! Excited to teach and learn! That's it. Simple, scannable, gives you data on who's joining and what they need, and keeps the feed clear for content that retains people past week one.

Hi everyone, I'm a contracts manager who doesn't want to stand around and watch my job get automated. Twenty years ago I started a Masters program in CS but I dropped out because I couldn't code the keystone projects. Downstream of that failure there were others. But now I can code in the programming language I know best: English. So I decided to try again. But where to begin? I was paralyzed by the blizzard of slick Youtube content. Then one day the algorithm took pity on me and dispensed a simple video of a man with a folder tree on a whiteboard and soil on his hands. Those were my hands and those folders are my folders from all those years ago! So here I am with Van Clief, et al. in my context and new energy in my chest cavity. Good luck to every last one of you.

@Thembelihle Gumede I am also working on a knowledge graph project, it is a steep learning curve. Good luck!
Any Success with Local LLM Setups?
Hi everyone! With the new CoPilot plan restructuring and limiting AI resources by making it more expensive, I have been wanting to get my feet wet with a free local LLM setup. Has anyone succeeded in creating a free local LLM setup that rivals or gets close to the reasoning and speed of Codex, CoPilot, Claude, etc? Please share you free setups: IDE, model, GPU and ram rig. Would like to hear if there have been successes and what failures you have experienced?

I think that no matter what your wallet will let you build, the exercise of building a local infrastructure is very good learning. I knew only what Docker and systemctl did, I had never used them myself. So I dropped an RTX A2000 12GB ($500 on eBay) into my mother's 11-year old Dell and with some help from Grok it runs Qwen3.5 9B with 32k context quite well. There's no chance you could pair-program with it if you had to lean on it like I do. But it is the infrastructure for my first project, with an OpenAI fallback. I say do what you can with what you can get, you need to understand this layer of the technology stack and this was a fun way to do it. One tip: get to 16GB if you can, several good models are just out of reach at 12GB.

@Colt Feltes Respectfully, these answers seem very coherent to me. You can plot the points in two dimensions: infrastructure budget and AI support dependence. I am low in the budget axis and high on the dependence axis, so the answer for me is a resounding no. @Jean Fourie and @Simon Gonzalez De Cruz have a high investment and lower dependence, they are over the line. @Charlie Weeks seems to be in a balanced place near the line. He is probably learning the most.
So Frustrated Right Now
Was anyone else affected by the Claude outage last evening April 29? When it came back I lost access to my account. This evening I spent two hours convincing Fin (the support AI) that it was an Anthropic issue, not my computer or browser. Now Fin says they will investigate but I don't get a support ticket number and Fin won't confirm a time frame or even promise that I will get a response. I realize my $20 does not buy concierge service but losing access indefinitely is very discouraging. If I want to keep going I have to start again in a new account. I have Github repos for the project and the project context but I only committed half of yesterday's work, and I no longer have access to the session I was working in or all the prior ones. I won't just sit here, but what should I do? Should I show my repos to some other tool? Bite the bullet and drop a new $20? Those sessions and my past ones will never meet.

@Marcin Hakemer-Fernandez I know, it sounds weird but it is true, Fin had me check everything including that, then gave up and ghosted me. I'm sure Codex will frustrate me someday too but not today!

@Ricky Miskin I don't think it is a TOS issue, first I asked Fin and it confirmed if I still have Pro in chat I am not suspended, also I am doing the most mundane project imaginable. My CLAUDE.md essentially says help me learn Agentic AI using ICM by building a smart Obsidian layer. No crypto-quantum-pirate BS. It happened exactly at the 4/29 outage too.

@John Karmaker Don't fret it, I am using SuperGrok! I am paid up to December. I think it is guiding me to build something a little (a lot) too ambitious and complicated. There are other issues as well and I am about to buy a month of Claude and show it my work.
