Community Relaxed Hangout - Ask Questions, Share Challenges, Be Understood
Hey everyone, A couple of weeks ago we had a really nice relaxed hangout — just a small group of us talking openly about tinnitus, sharing challenges, asking questions, and supporting each other. It was a good conversation. The kind you can't really have anywhere else. I'd love to do it again this Saturday, May 30. No agenda. No pressure. Just a warm, honest conversation with people who actually get it. Would you join? Vote below and let me know. 👇💙 Yours truly, (your tinnitus) Guy.

I could do that. Would be 6 pm here in Italy I assume.
When Tinnitus Keeps Pulling Your Attention Back 😖
One of the hardest parts about tinnitus is not always the sound itself. Sometimes it’s how much space it starts taking in your mind. 🧠 You wake up and check it. You walk into a quiet room and check it. You try to relax and check it. You have a good moment, then suddenly wonder, “Wait… is it still there?” And of course, once you check, your brain brings it right back to the front. 🤦‍♂️ This is one of the frustrating loops with tinnitus. And very common amongst tinnitus sufferers. The more important your brain thinks the sound is, the more it keeps scanning for it. And the more it scans for it, the more important the sound feels. 🔁 So what do you do? The goal is not to fight the sound or force yourself to ignore it. The goal is to gently teach your brain: “I hear it, but this does not need my full attention right now.” Then redirect to something specific. Not just “I’ll distract myself,” but something clear: I’m going to make dinner I’m going to answer one email I’m going to walk outside for 5 minutes I’m going to watch one show I’m going to call someone I’m going to do one small task The activity does not have to be big, but for most people, physical activities are easier to use. The key is that you are showing your brain that tinnitus can be present without being the center of everything. 🙏 That is a big part of habituation. Not silence. Not perfection. Not never noticing it. But slowly reducing how much priority tinnitus gets in your mind. So tonight, try this: If you catch yourself checking or monitoring tinnitus, pause for a second and say: “Okay, I’m checking again. I don’t need to solve this right now.” Then choose one small thing to put your attention back on. That simple shift, repeated over time, can help your brain learn that tinnitus does not need to run the whole day. 🙏 I'm curious about you: When does tinnitus take up the most mental space for you? Morning? Quiet rooms? Trying to sleep? Working? Relaxing? After a spike? Share below if you feel comfortable. This is one of those things a lot of people experience, but not everyone talks about.

Yes, I would really like to get your new tool. I’m in the middle of an 18-day trip from Italy to California to St. Louis to Connecticut and back to Italy. I’ve tried to minimize the impact of changes in air pressure on flights, mostly successfully, but not always - I was totally deaf in my left ear after a flight from San Diego to St. Louis, but fortunately my hearing mostly cleared up by the next day. I’ve been using low dose Alprazolam during daytime as a relaxant, which has usually lessened my tinnitus and allowed me to function almost normally (though with my tinnitus ever present), though my doctor is switching me to Paxil, which is non-addictive even over long periods of time. I sometimes use Ambien as a sleep aid, though try to avoid using it much. I habituated to my tinnitus twice over the past 19 years, but haven’t been able to do it this time since I had surgery in February for a ruptured knee tendon and my tinnitus really spiked. Thus, any assistance would be most welcome. Thanks

What time? Probably can”t do it due to time difference here in Italy.
Reflection Friday: How did you do this week with your ONE thing?
Happy Friday, awesome community! 💙 Monday you committed to ONE thing to focus on in your tinnitus lasting relief journey. Wednesday you checked-in and reported progress. Today is Friday. Let's share our progress so far, so that we can help each other move forward. 🙏 Did you make progress this week? Even a little progress is huge with tinnitus! If no progress, or if you wanted more than you achieved, what do you think is holding you back? Share below. No judgement, just data to learn from. PS - Exciting Leo update coming up in a couple of hours (after my last client session for this week).

As Joseph Fitzgerald did, had an MRI of my brain recently recommended by a neurologist. A few very minor vascular irregularities that my doctor said were not out of the ordinary for someone my age (81), but all else normal. I just kept my eyes closed and relaxed, and the noise didn’t bother me. Also had an echocardiogram of my carotid arteries, which showed minor stenosis but nothing of concern. Just wanted to confirm that I had no medical issues, but who knows what affects tinnitus. Am still very distressed since my tinnitus has been louder the past two days. Am trying Guy’s relaxation techniques, but not much affect yet.
