Thank you to the Ottawa Police Service for hosting such an informative evening at the Château Laurier. It was inspiring to see the wide range of opportunities available — from civilian careers to sworn officer pathways — and to have open conversations with unit members. One of the biggest takeaways was learning how specialized units like Human Trafficking and Fraud Investigations operate, and how officers can pursue those investigative roles after gaining frontline experience. Understanding the application process, the fitness requirements, and the long-term career pathways made the journey feel much clearer and more attainable. For those interested in moving toward investigative roles such as Human Trafficking or Fraud, the first step is applying to become a police constable with the Ottawa Police Service and successfully completing the recruitment process, including the fitness test. Once hired and after gaining patrol experience, members can apply internally to specialized units when opportunities become available. The evening truly highlighted that there are many doors within policing — and that with commitment, preparation, and perseverance, specialized investigative careers are possible.
