@Richard Knight I don’t think it was about missing praise or recognition. It was about what I absorbed growing up. My mom struggled with her own sense of worth, and kids learn that through what’s tolerated and minimized. I learned to measure myself by usefulness instead of inherent value. I don’t blame her, she did the best she could. What I really needed wasn’t praise, but to be shown that it was okay to create boundaries and be confident in who I am, without apology. That worth isn’t something you earn by being agreeable. I know my value now because I’ve defined it myself, and I’m intentional about modeling that for my boys. They don’t just hear it, they see it.
