Today's Seniors Grew Up with Live Music
I just learned that Jeff, a guy who I hung out with and played in a rock band with when we were in high school recently died. I lost track of him after we graduated back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. I found a photo of our band playing at a formal prom in Saint Clair, PA from back around 1968. I was around 15 or 16 at the time. LOL, I was playing my Fender Mustang guitar through a Bogen PA connected to a homemade speaker cabinet with a reverb unit about the size of a Fishman Loudbox Artist. My friend Jeff was playing the organ, but unfortunately he was on the side that the photo did not capture. LOL, we ended up playing at this prom because the band that they hired did not show up. We were practicing that night when we got the call, so we quickly packed up, showed up in beat-up clothes and performed. Note, the kids (HS seniors) dancing are now the seniors (still kids) we perform for. Hey Jude, don't let me down...

Your story reminded me….Back in the early ‘60s when I was in high school, my Kingston trio-like folk group had just added a drummer and transitioned to rock, especially British Invasion. We got hired to do the Junior prom in the cafeteria and set up with 2 microphones provided by the school for our 3 singers (Beatles style). A while later, we came back to get started, but there was now only one mic on the stage. After searching around, we saw it in the cafeteria office through the locked door window pane. We went to the principal and she told us she put it there because she decided we didn’t need it. No amount of logic or pleading could budge her so we ended up have to all work off the one mic. Ah…high school! I went to our 50th reunion in 2015 and it was thrilled to see my old drummer there. Great memories.
