๐Ÿ Should You Bring Plants Inside Yet? A Fall Timing Guide
The days are shorter, the nights are coolerโ€ฆ and your plants are wondering whatโ€™s next. Knowing when to bring your container plants indoors can make all the difference between keeping them happy and losing them to a surprise frost. Hereโ€™s how to time it just right and make the transition smooth for everyone (plants included!). While dates vary by region, the real signal is nighttime temperatures. * Bring plants inside when nights consistently drop below 50ยฐF (10ยฐC). * Tropical and tender plants (like basil, begonias, or ferns) should come in even soonerโ€”around 55ยฐF. * Cool-tolerant varieties (like kale or pansies) can stay out until the mid-40s. ๐ŸŒฟ ๐–๐ก๐ข๐œ๐ก ๐๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐จ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ * ๐“๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ โ€“ palms, ferns, philodendrons, pothos * ๐“๐ž๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐›๐ฌ โ€“ basil, oregano, mint * ๐’๐ฎ๐œ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ & ๐œ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข โ€“ protect from cold and wet * ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ซ ๐š๐ง๐ง๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ๐ฌ โ€“ geraniums, coleus, begonias can overwinter inside in bright spots ๐Ÿชด ๐๐ž๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐“๐ก๐ž๐ฆ ๐ˆ๐ง * ๐ˆ๐ง๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ญ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฌ โ€“ Check under leaves and around soil for aphids or spider mites. * ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ง๐ž & ๐‚๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ง โ€“ Trim leggy growth and wipe down leaves with a damp cloth. * ๐‘๐ž๐ฉ๐จ๐ญ ๐ข๐Ÿ ๐๐ž๐ž๐๐ž๐ โ€“ Remove any dead roots or refresh tired soil. * ๐€๐œ๐œ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐’๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ฒ โ€“ Bring plants in at night for a few days before moving them indoors full-time. ๐Ÿก ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐จ๐จ๐ซ ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐“๐ข๐ฉ๐ฌ * ๐‹๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ: Place near windows with bright, indirect sunlight. * ๐‡๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ข๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ: Indoor air gets dryโ€”group plants together or use a pebble tray. * ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ : Less frequent in winter; always check soil first. ๐ŸŒŸ ๐…๐ข๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐“๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐ญ Fall transitions can be tricky, but timing it right keeps your plants thriving through winter. I brought mine in last week. It's gotten so cold here at night.

I saw this come across my Facebook and thought it was cute. Another excuse for another plant!

Turn a Basket into a Fall Planter (Without Losing Soil!)
Baskets make gorgeous fall plantersโ€”they add rustic charm and showcase mums, pansies, kale, and even trailing ivy. The problem? They arenโ€™t exactly built to hold soil and water. Without a little prep, youโ€™ll have a mess on your deck or patio. But with a few clever tricks, you can transform almost any basket into a sturdy, stylish container that lasts the whole season. ๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ ๐Ÿ: ๐‚๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‘๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐๐š๐ฌ๐ค๐ž๐ญ * Look for sturdy woven baskets or market baskets with strong handles. * Avoid flimsy or very shallow baskets, since theyโ€™ll collapse under damp soil. The secret to preventing soil leaks is lining. Here are a few options: * Coconut Coir Liner โ€“ breathable and holds moisture. * Landscape Fabric โ€“ easy to cut and allows drainage. * Plastic with Drainage Holes โ€“ a plastic bag or sheet cut to fit, with holes punched in the bottom. ๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ ๐Ÿ‘: ๐€๐๐ ๐ƒ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐š๐ ๐ž * Place a layer of pebbles, broken pottery, or pinecones in the bottom. * This prevents soggy soil and helps roots stay healthy. ๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ ๐Ÿ’: ๐…๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ * Add high-quality potting mix, filling about two-thirds of the basket. * Tuck in your favorite fall flowers or foliageโ€”mums, asters, ornamental cabbage, and trailing vines are perfect. * Firm the soil gently around roots and water well. ๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ ๐Ÿ“: ๐’๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฅ๐ž & ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ฒ๐ญ * Position your basket planter on your porch, steps, or patio table. * Pair with pumpkins, gourds, or lanterns for that cozy autumn vibe. โœ… Bonus Tip: If your basket isnโ€™t weatherproof, consider slipping a plastic nursery pot (already planted) inside. This protects the basket and makes cleanup easier at the seasonโ€™s end.

@Sue Palmer Yes I do too. I had never heard of them until this patient gave me one. I have a few cuttings off of it and I bought another one with brighter red in color.
