It's happened to us all. You arrive at the yard, and things don't go to plan. Your horse is spooky, the weather turns, or you have a frustrating schooling session. Instantly, the inner critic chimes in: "This is going to be a terrible ride." As an NLP practitioner, I often think of the old Chinese farmer story: 🌾 A farmer's horse runs away. The neighbours say, "What bad luck!" The farmer replies, "Maybe." 🌾 The next day, the horse returns with three wild horses. The neighbours say, "Wonderful!" The farmer replies, "Maybe." 🌾 The farmer's son breaks his leg training one of them. The neighbours cry, "Terrible!" The farmer replies, "Maybe." 🌾 The army arrives to draft young men for war, but they pass over the son because of his broken leg. The neighbours say "That's lucky" The farmer simply says, "Maybe." The Confident Rider takeaway: Horses live entirely in the present moment. As humans, we love to predict the future. We take one "bad" moment and turn it into a disaster. When we label a ride as "terrible" or a "failure," our brains go looking for evidence to prove it. Our muscles tense, our breathing changes, and our horses feel it instantly. A "maybe" mindset changes that: Ditch the labels. A spooky moment isn't a "bad ride." It's just feedback, and a chance to practise your mindset tools. Break the panic loop. When something goes wrong, instead of spiralling into "I can't do this," pause and think, "Maybe this is just part of the process." Stay in control. You stop riding an emotional rollercoaster and start anchoring* a calm, centred state, for both you and your horse. (* How to do this is part of what I teach; you will also find it in the classroom on here) Next time your horse throws you a curveball, take a deep breath, release your jaw, and tell yourself: "Maybe." 🧘♀️✨ What's a "bad" riding moment that turned out to be a great learning experience in the end?
